Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ظَلَمَ (Zalama): To wrong oneself by committing a sin or falling into error.
- بَدَّلَ حُسْنًا بَعْدَ سُوءٍ (Baddala husnan ba'da soo'): To replace evil with good, meaning to turn in sincere repentance and replace the wrongdoing with righteous deeds.
- غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ (Ghafoorun Raheem): Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful — two of Allah’s beautiful names emphasizing His boundless forgiveness and compassion.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse comes as a continuation of Allah’s reassurance to Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) at the sacred valley of Tuwa, when he was overcome with fear after his staff turned into a moving serpent. Allah, the Exalted, had just told him: *"Do not fear, for indeed the messengers do not fear in My presence."* Then, to leave no room for despair or anxiety, Allah immediately added this exception — a door of hope wide open for every soul.
The verse means: "Except for one who has wronged [himself], then replaced [the evil] with good after [the] evil — then indeed, I am Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
This is an exclusive exception — meaning, even if a person has fallen into sin and wronged their own soul, they are not excluded from Allah’s mercy. The path is never closed. The condition is simple yet profound: after the sin, one must sincerely repent, turn back to Allah, and replace the bad deeds with good ones. This is the essence of *tawbah* (repentance) — not merely uttering words, but a genuine transformation of the heart and conduct.
When Allah says *"then indeed, I am Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful,"* He is making a divine promise. He does not say "I may forgive" or "I might forgive" — He affirms it with certainty. The One who created you, who knows your weaknesses and struggles, is the very One who promises to forgive you the moment you turn to Him. This is the beauty of Islam: no matter how far you have fallen, the door of repentance remains open until the sun rises from the west.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear reader, do you feel weighed down by your past mistakes? Do you think that your sins are too great, or that Allah will never accept you? Listen to this verse — it is a direct address to your heart. Allah is not telling you that you are perfect; He is telling you that He is Forgiving. The word *"Ghafoor"* (Oft-Forgiving) means He forgives repeatedly, time after time, without tiring. The word *"Raheem"* (Most Merciful) means His mercy reaches you before you even ask, and embraces you the moment you turn.
So do not despair. Do not let Shaytan (Satan) whisper to you that you are beyond redemption. Replace your bad deeds with good ones — pray, give charity, seek knowledge, help others, and be kind. Every good deed you do after your repentance is a step closer to His love. And know with certainty that when you take one step toward Allah, He takes ten steps toward you.
This is the religion of mercy. This is the message of the Qur'an. This is your invitation to a new beginning — today, right now, in this very moment. Turn to your Lord, and let His forgiveness wash away your past, for He is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
