Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah Almighty had already shown Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) the magnificent miracle of the staff transforming into a living serpent, He now commanded him with another profound sign: "And put your hand into the opening of your garment at your chest." When Musa withdrew his hand, it emerged shining white like snow or pure light — radiant and luminous, yet completely free from any illness, blemish, or leprosy. This was not a disease or a defect; it was a brilliant, supernatural radiance that dazzled the eyes of all who beheld it.
This miracle was not an isolated event. Allah included it among nine distinct signs — divine proofs and evidences — that Musa was to present before Pharaoh and his people. These nine signs were: the staff (turning into a serpent), the shining hand, the years of drought and famine, the shortage of crops and fruits, the flood (tawfan), the locusts (jarad), the lice or small insects (qummal), the frogs (dafadi'), and the blood (dam) that affected the waters of Egypt. Each of these was a clear, undeniable testament to the truth of Musa's prophethood and the authenticity of his message.
Allah sent Musa with these overwhelming evidences specifically to Pharaoh and his people because they were a nation that had transgressed all bounds — they had rebelled against their Creator, rejected His signs, and persisted in their arrogance, tyranny, and disbelief. They had enslaved the Children of Israel and subjected them to terrible oppression. Therefore, Allah equipped His Messenger with these extraordinary miracles to break through their stubbornness and call them back to the path of truth and submission to their Lord.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in teaching us that Allah never leaves His chosen servants without support! When He commissions a mission, He provides the means, the proofs, and the empowerment needed to fulfill it. Just as Musa was given nine clear signs to face Pharaoh's tyranny, every believer who sincerely carries the message of Islam is given the signs of guidance — the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the living example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — to illuminate the path and overcome every obstacle.
Notice also the gentleness embedded in this command: Musa was instructed to place his hand in his garment — a simple, intimate gesture — and what emerged was light. This teaches us that even in the face of the most arrogant oppressors, our approach should be one of wisdom, beauty, and evident truth, not aggression or despair. The miracles were not just about power; they were about mercy — giving Pharaoh and his people every opportunity to see the truth and turn back to Allah before punishment overtook them.
And if Pharaoh's people were called "fasiqeen" for their rebellion, let us reflect on our own state: how often do we deviate from Allah's commands in our daily lives? This verse is a gentle reminder that Allah's mercy is vast — He sent miracles to guide even the most rebellious nations. How much more, then, does He desire guidance and forgiveness for those who turn to Him with sincere hearts? Let us never despair of Allah's mercy, and let us always carry the light of faith in our hearts, ready to shine it upon a world that desperately needs it.
