But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ahwaa'ahum (أهواءهم): Their desires and whims — the inclinations of the soul that are not guided by divine revelation.
  • Hudan (هدى): Guidance — the clear, revealed path from Allah that leads to truth and righteousness.
  • Al-Zalimeen (الظالمين): The wrongdoers — those who transgress Allah's limits and oppress their own souls through disbelief and disobedience.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) challenged the disbelievers of Quraysh to bring a book from Allah that is better guided than the Torah and the Qur'an — as proof that their rejection was based on evidence rather than stubbornness — and they failed to respond, Allah revealed this verse to settle the matter definitively.

If they do not answer your call, O Prophet, then know with certainty that their rejection is not rooted in any proof or sound reasoning. Rather, they are merely following their own whims and desires. They have no argument, no evidence, and no divine authority for their position — only blind adherence to their inclinations and inherited traditions.

Then Allah poses a rhetorical question that leaves no room for doubt: Who is more astray than one who follows his own desires without any guidance from Allah? The answer is clear — no one. There is no misguidance deeper than that of a person who abandons the light of revelation and instead makes their own desires their deity and their guide. Such a person wanders in darkness, led by nothing but the caprices of the soul, which pull them in every direction.

Finally, Allah declares that He does not guide the wrongdoing people — those who oppress themselves by choosing disbelief, who cross the boundaries He has set, and who prefer their whims over His guidance. This is both a warning and a comfort: a warning that persistent wrongdoing blocks the path to guidance, and a comfort to the believers that those who reject the truth are not following any sound path — they are simply lost.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. The human heart is naturally inclined to follow its desires, but when desires are left unchecked without the compass of divine guidance, they lead to ruin. The Qur'an invites you to free yourself from the slavery of your whims and to submit to the One who created you and knows what is best for you. True freedom is not in following every desire — it is in surrendering to the guidance of Allah, who says: *"Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people."* So be among those who seek His guidance, and you will find a light that illuminates every step of your journey — in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 48-52 — Al-Qasas

But when the truth came to them from Us, they said, "Why was he not given like that which was given to Moses?" Did they not disbelieve in that which was given to Moses before? They said, "[They are but] two works of magic supporting each other, and indeed we are, in both, disbelievers."
Say, "Then bring a scripture from Allah which is more guiding than either of them that I may follow it, if you should be truthful."
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
And We have [repeatedly] conveyed to them the Qur'an that they might be reminded.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it - they are believers in it.
