Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَهْدَىٰ (ahdā): More guiding, more rightly directing, more correct and upright in leading people to the truth.
- مِنْهُمَا (minhumā): From the two (i.e., the Torah and the Qur'an).
- أَتَّبِعْهُ (attabi'hu): I will follow it, adhere to it, and make it my path.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, Allah commands you to challenge those who reject the truth and claim that the Torah and the Qur'an are mere sorcery or misguidance. Say to them: "If you are truly sincere in your claim, then bring a book from Allah that is more rightly guiding, more upright, and more perfect in leading humanity to the straight path than these two Books — the Torah and the Qur'an. If you can produce such a book, I will willingly follow it and abandon what I have been sent with."
This is a decisive challenge that exposes the falsehood of their claims. For no one — neither human nor jinn — can produce anything comparable to the guidance contained in these divine revelations. The Qur'an itself has already challenged all of creation to produce even a single chapter like it, and they have failed throughout history. This verse demonstrates the absolute truth of Allah's revelation and the inability of any creature to match its wisdom, guidance, and perfection.
The beauty of this challenge lies in its fairness: the Prophet ﷺ does not merely defend his message but invites his opponents to bring forth something better if they can. This is the hallmark of true faith — it does not fear scrutiny or comparison, for the truth stands firm on its own merits. And indeed, fourteen centuries have passed, and no one has ever been able to meet this challenge, proving beyond doubt that the Qur'an is the word of Allah, the Lord of all worlds.
This verse also carries a profound lesson for every believer: the Qur'an is the ultimate source of guidance, surpassing all other books in its clarity, wisdom, and transformative power. Whoever sincerely seeks the truth will find it in this Book, and whoever follows it will never go astray. It is a mercy from Allah and a light that illuminates the path to His pleasure and to eternal success in the Hereafter. Let us hold fast to it, reflect upon its meanings, and implement its teachings in our lives — for in it lies our salvation in this world and the next.
