Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- 'Ad – The people of Prophet Hud, who lived in the region of Al-Ahqaf (sand dunes) in southern Arabia.
- Thamud – The people of Prophet Salih, who lived in Al-Hijr (northwestern Arabia) and carved their homes into mountains.
- Mustabsirin – People of insight and understanding, capable of discerning truth from falsehood, yet they deliberately chose falsehood.
Tafsir (Explanation):
And We also destroyed the nations of 'Ad and Thamud, just as We destroyed those who came before them. Their destruction is not a hidden matter—you, O people of Makkah, can see the evidence with your own eyes whenever you pass by their ruined dwellings. The empty, desolate homes of 'Ad in the southern sands and the carved mountains of Thamud in Al-Hijr stand as silent witnesses to the fate that befell them when they rejected their messengers.
What led them to this destruction? Satan had made their evil deeds appear beautiful and attractive to them. He adorned their disbelief, their arrogance, and their disobedience in such a way that they saw their corruption as righteousness. He turned them away from the straight path—the path of faith in Allah and His messengers—and blocked every road that could have led them to guidance.
And here is the most striking part: they were not ignorant people. They were people of intellect and insight, fully capable of distinguishing truth from falsehood. Their messengers had shown them clear proofs and signs. They knew what was right and what was wrong. Yet, despite this clarity, they chose to follow their desires over divine guidance. They were so blinded by their pride and self-admiration that they believed they were on the right course while, in reality, they were drowning in misguidance.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound lesson. These nations were not destroyed because they lacked intelligence or evidence—they were destroyed because they allowed Satan to beautify their sins, and they stubbornly rejected the truth even when it was crystal clear before them. Their ruined homes remain as a sign for humanity: a warning that no power, no wealth, and no cleverness can protect a people who turn away from their Creator.
Today, the same test faces every soul. Satan still works tirelessly to make sin look attractive—to make arrogance seem strength, to make disobedience seem freedom, and to make heedlessness seem peace. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent you the Qur'an and the Sunnah as a light to guide you through this darkness. He has given you intellect and insight, just as He gave the people of 'Ad and Thamud. The question is: will you use that insight to follow the truth, or will you let Satan deceive you as he deceived them?
The choice is yours. The path of guidance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Do not wait until you see the ruins of your own life to realize what you have lost. Turn to Allah now, with a sincere heart, and He will guide you to the straight path—the path of those who used their insight wisely and earned His pleasure and eternal reward.
