Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Rajfah (الرَّجْفَةُ): The severe earthquake or violent tremor that shakes the earth violently.
- Jāthimīn (جَاثِمِينَ): Those who have fallen dead, collapsed on their knees, faces pressed to the ground, motionless and lifeless.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) delivered his message with clarity and sincerity, calling his people to worship Allah alone and to abandon their fraudulent practices in trade and dealings, his people—the inhabitants of Madyan—rejected him and persisted in their denial. They did not merely refuse his call; they belied him outright, treating his warnings as empty words.
So Allah's punishment descended upon them: a mighty earthquake seized them, shaking the very ground beneath their feet. The earth trembled violently, and in an instant, their homes became their graves. By morning, they lay dead in their own dwellings, fallen on their knees, lifeless bodies pressed to the dust—a horrific scene of utter destruction and humiliation. No one survived to tell the tale, and their wealth, power, and numbers availed them nothing against the decree of their Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse stands as a timeless reminder that no power, wealth, or social standing can shield anyone from the consequence of rejecting the truth. The people of Madyan were not weak or ignorant; they were a thriving community with established systems of trade and commerce. Yet, when they chose arrogance over humility and denial over faith, their worldly strength turned to dust in a single moment.
Dear reader, let this story awaken your heart. The same Allah who sent the earthquake to Madyan is alive and watchful today. His mercy is vast for those who turn to Him, but His justice is certain for those who persist in falsehood. Do not let the temporary pleasures of this world deceive you, for the Hereafter is far better and everlasting. Embrace the message of Islam with an open heart, for it is the path to true peace and salvation—both in this life and the next. And remember: the door of repentance remains open until the moment the punishment arrives. So hasten to your Lord before the tremor comes, and you find yourself, like them, fallen and motionless, with no chance to return.
