And what struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of Allah that He might make evident the [true] believers.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Yawm iltaqa al-jam'aan" — The day the two gatherings met, i.e., the Day of Uhud when the believers' army and the polytheists' army confronted each other.
  • "Bi-idhni Allah" — By Allah's permission, meaning by His knowledge, decree, and will.
  • "Wa li-ya'lam al-mu'mineen" — And so that He may make evident (to creation) the true believers.

Explanation of the Verse:

What befell you, O believers, on the Day of Uhud — the wounds, the losses, and the setback after an initial victory — was not a random accident or a defeat of Allah's promise. Rather, it all occurred by Allah's perfect knowledge, decree, and will. Nothing in this universe moves or rests except by His command, and no harm or benefit touches a soul except what He has ordained.

Yet this was not a purposeless decree. Allah — in His infinite wisdom — willed this trial to distinguish the sincere believers from those who merely claimed faith with their tongues. When the battle turned and hardship struck, the true believers remained steadfast, trusting their Lord and accepting His decree with patience and submission. Meanwhile, those with weak faith or hidden hypocrisy showed their reality — some fled, some questioned the Prophet's judgment, and some revealed what was in their hearts.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every Muslim: trials and difficulties are not signs of Allah's abandonment; rather, they are a divine filter that purifies the ranks of the believers, elevates their ranks, and brings out the best in their patience and reliance upon Allah. The Companions — may Allah be pleased with them all — learned this lesson on the slopes of Uhud, and their steadfastness became a beacon for generations to come.

So, dear believer, when hardship strikes you in your own life, remember that Allah's decree is always wrapped in wisdom. He tests you not to break you, but to build you — to reveal the gold from the dust, to strengthen your faith, and to raise your station in this world and the next. Embrace His decree with patience, for after every difficulty comes ease, and the reward of the patient is without measure.

📜 Verse 164-168 — Aal-Imran

Certainly did Allah confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.
Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves." Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
And what struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of Allah that He might make evident the [true] believers.
And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of Allah or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] fighting, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah is most Knowing of what they conceal -
Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful."
