Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Muṣībah (مصيبة): A calamity or affliction that strikes a person, often as a test or consequence.
- Mathlayhā (مثليها): Twice its like; double the equivalent.
- Annā (أنى): How? From where? In this context, it expresses astonishment and bewilderment.
- Min ʿindi anfusikum (من عند أنفسكم): From your own selves; i.e., resulting from your own actions and choices.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers! Reflect on this profound moment in your history. When you faced a calamity at the Battle of Uḥud—where seventy of you were martyred—you had already inflicted twice that loss upon your enemy at the Battle of Badr, where seventy were killed and seventy were taken captive. Yet, in your shock and confusion, you asked: "How could this happen to us? We are believers, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is among us! How can we be defeated while our enemies are polytheists?"
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, answers this question directly: "Say: It is from yourselves." The cause of your setback was not a failure of Allah's promise, nor a weakness in His religion—it was your own disobedience. You had been commanded by the Prophet ﷺ to hold your strategic position on the mountain pass, but when victory seemed near and the spoils of war appeared, you disagreed among yourselves and abandoned that position. That lapse in discipline and obedience opened the door to what befell you.
This is a timeless lesson for every believer: victories and defeats in this life are not random. Allah has set laws and systems in motion. When you adhere to His commands and the guidance of His Messenger, you earn His support. When you deviate, even slightly, you bear the consequences—not because Allah has abandoned you, but because you have stepped away from the very means of His help.
And then comes the ultimate reassurance: "Indeed, Allah is over all things competent." He is fully capable of granting victory or withholding it, of raising you or testing you, all according to His perfect wisdom. Nothing happens except by His will, and His power knows no limits. So when trials come, do not despair—return to Him, correct your course, and trust that His decree is always just and purposeful.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, this verse teaches us that our trials often carry the seeds of our own choices. But it also opens the door to hope: if the cause of failure lies within you, then the cure lies within you too. By strengthening your obedience, purifying your intentions, and uniting around the guidance of Allah and His Messenger, you can reclaim His support. Allah's power is absolute—He can turn your weakness into strength, your loss into gain, and your trial into a means of purification and elevation. So never lose heart, for your Lord is capable of all things, and His mercy embraces those who turn back to Him with sincerity.
