📖 English Meaning
And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of Allah or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] fighting, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah is most Knowing of what they conceal -

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nāfaqū (نافقوا): Those who showed hypocrisy — outwardly displaying faith while concealing disbelief.
  • Idfa‘ū (ادفعوا): Repel the enemy or defend — i.e., strengthen the Muslim ranks by your presence, even if you do not fight.
  • Aqrabu (أقرب): Closer or nearer in state and condition.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, reveals that the trials which befell the believers at the Battle of Uhud served a greater purpose: to distinguish the sincere from the hypocritical, and to expose what lay hidden in the hearts of those who claimed faith but harbored doubt and enmity toward Islam.

When the hypocrites — led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy and his companions — withdrew from the battlefield, the sincere believers called out to them: "Come, fight in the cause of Allah, or at least defend your families and your city!" But they excused themselves with hollow words: "If we had known there would be actual fighting, we would have followed you." Yet this was a blatant lie, for they knew well that a battle was imminent, but their hearts were paralyzed by fear and their loyalty was to disbelief, not to the faith they professed.

Allah exposes their true state: on that day, they were closer to disbelief than to faith. Their tongues uttered words that contradicted what their hearts concealed. They claimed to be Muslims, yet their actions and excuses revealed the reality of their hypocrisy. And Allah — who knows all that is hidden and concealed — is fully aware of what they kept secret in their breasts, and He will hold them to account for it.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. Allah tests His servants to reveal the truth of their faith — not because He needs to know, but so that justice is established and hearts are purified. The hypocrites' tragedy was not in their fear alone, but in their dishonesty: they claimed what they did not believe, and they abandoned the cause of Allah while pretending otherwise.

Dear Muslim, let this be a reminder that faith is not a word spoken by the tongue, but a conviction settled in the heart and proven by action. When the call to support Allah's religion comes, do not be among those who find excuses while claiming love for Islam. Be among the truthful ones whose words match their deeds, whose hearts are aligned with their tongues, and whose lives testify to the sincerity of their faith. For Allah knows what is in your heart — so make it pure, make it firm, and let your actions be a reflection of your belief. The reward of the truthful is with Allah, and His knowledge encompasses all that you conceal and all that you reveal.

📜 Verse 165-169 — Aal-Imran

Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves." Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
And what struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of Allah that He might make evident the [true] believers.
And Allah is most Knowing of what they conceal -
Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful."
And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision,
