Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yathrib: The old name of the city of Madinah before Islam.
- La muqama lakum: There is no place of staying or standing for you (i.e., no safe position to remain).
- Awrah: Exposed, unprotected, vulnerable to the enemy or thieves.
Tafsir (Interpretation):
Remember, O Prophet, the moment when a group of the hypocrites—those who harbored disbelief in their hearts while claiming faith—called out to the believers among the people of Madinah, saying: "O people of Yathrib! There is no place for you to stand and fight here; this position is hopeless and doomed to failure. So return to your homes inside the city!" They sought to spread fear and demoralize the ranks of the believers, trying to convince them that the battle was lost before it had even truly begun.
At the same time, another faction among these hypocrites—specifically from the tribes of Banu Salamah and Banu Harithah—approached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked for his permission to leave the battlefield and go back to their houses. They made a false excuse, claiming: "Indeed, our homes are exposed and unprotected, lying on the outskirts of the city facing the enemy. We fear for our families and property, so allow us to return and secure them."
But Allah, the All-Knowing, exposed their lie and declared the truth: their homes were not exposed or vulnerable at all—they were perfectly secure and well-fortified. Their claim was nothing but a hollow pretext. They had no genuine concern for their families; rather, their only true intention was to flee from fighting and escape the hardships of jihad in the cause of Allah. They sought to abandon their brothers in faith at a moment of great trial, preferring their own comfort and safety over the defense of their religion and community.
This verse serves as a timeless reminder of the nature of hypocrisy and the weakness of those who lack sincere faith. When trials intensify, the true character of people is revealed: the believers stand firm, trusting in Allah and fulfilling their duty, while the hypocrites seek every excuse to escape and save themselves. Yet Allah, in His perfect wisdom, exposes their schemes and protects His religion and His righteous servants. The believers are thus encouraged to remain steadfast, to place their complete trust in Allah, and to never be swayed by the whispers of those who spread fear and doubt. For victory comes only from Allah, and He never abandons those who are sincere in their faith and patient in their struggle.
