Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- الْمُنَافِقُونَ (Al-Munafiqun): The hypocrites—those who outwardly profess faith but inwardly conceal disbelief.
- الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ (Alladhina fi qulubihim marad): Those in whose hearts is a sickness—i.e., weakness of faith, doubt, and uncertainty that undermines their conviction.
- غُرُورًا (Ghururan): A delusion, deception, or false promise—something that misleads a person into expecting what will never come to pass.
The Interpretation:
In this verse, Allah recalls a critical moment during the Battle of the Trench (Al-Ahzab), when the believers were tested with fear, hunger, and the threat of a united enemy siege. At that time, the hypocrites and those with weak faith—whose hearts harbored doubt and whose belief was fragile—began to speak words that exposed their inner reality. They said: "What Allah and His Messenger promised us is nothing but delusion."
They referred to the Prophet’s ﷺ promise of victory, divine support, and the eventual conquest of the lands of Persia and Byzantium. Yet, when they saw the overwhelming forces gathered against them, their weak faith crumbled, and they mocked these promises as empty words—mere illusions meant to deceive them. They could not see beyond their immediate circumstances, nor could they trust in Allah’s decree and the truth of His promise.
This statement was not merely a slip of the tongue; it was a revelation of what lay buried in their hearts. The hypocrites had always doubted Allah’s promise of help, and when trials intensified, their doubt surfaced as open mockery. As for those with sickness in their hearts—those whose faith was weak but not entirely absent—their doubt led them to echo the same words, revealing their lack of certainty in Allah’s power and His Messenger’s truthfulness.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us that trials are not merely obstacles—they are filters that separate the truthful from the false, the steadfast from the wavering. When difficulties arise, the pure heart remembers Allah’s promises and finds peace in His words, while the sick heart begins to question and despair.
Allah’s promise to His believers is true and certain: victory comes with patience, relief follows hardship, and His support is with those who remain firm. So, when you face trials in your life—whether personal, social, or spiritual—do not let doubt creep into your heart. Instead, hold fast to the words of your Lord, for He never breaks His promise. The Quran and the Sunnah are filled with glad tidings of success for those who believe and remain patient. Let your faith be your anchor, and let your trust in Allah be your shield against the whispers of despair.
And remember: the hypocrites of every era share one trait—they see only the storm and forget the One who controls it. But the believer sees beyond the storm, knowing that Allah’s promise is the ultimate reality, and that every trial is but a step toward a greater victory.
