Word Meanings:

  • Bā‘id bayna asfārinā: "Make our journeys longer" – they asked Allah to increase the distance between their towns, removing the closely spaced, prosperous villages that had made their travels easy and comfortable.
  • Ẓalamū anfusahum: "They wronged themselves" – through ingratitude, arrogance, and rejection of Allah’s blessings.
  • Aḥādīth: "Tales and stories" – they became cautionary tales that later generations would recount.
  • Mazzagnāhum kulla mumazzaq: "We scattered them completely" – they were dispersed and fragmented across the lands, losing their unity and prosperity.

Explanation of the Verse:

The people of Saba’ had been blessed with an extraordinary network of closely connected, fertile towns stretching from Yemen to Syria. Their journeys were short, safe, and comfortable, with abundant provisions and shade along the way. But instead of being grateful, they grew restless and arrogant. They became bored with ease and comfort, and in their pride, they said: "Our Lord, make our journeys longer!" They desired hardship and distance so that they could boast of their endurance and show off their riding animals and provisions to the poor among them. This was a sign of their ingratitude and spiritual blindness.

They wronged themselves by rejecting the blessings of Allah and refusing to thank Him. They envied the poor and looked down upon them, and their hearts became hardened with arrogance. So Allah answered their foolish request in a way that was both just and devastating: He destroyed the intermediate towns, turning their once-thriving land into desolate ruins. Their easy journeys became long and perilous, and their unity was shattered. Allah made them a tale for later generations—people would say, "Have you heard what happened to Saba’?"—and scattered them across the earth in every direction, so that they lost their homeland, their prosperity, and their cohesion.

In this story lies a profound lesson for every person who is patient in the face of trials and grateful for blessings. The patient one—who endures hardship without despair and remains steadfast in obedience to Allah—and the grateful one—who recognizes Allah’s favors and uses them in ways that please Him—will find in this account clear signs of Allah’s power, wisdom, and justice. It teaches us that arrogance and ingratitude lead to ruin, while humility and thankfulness lead to preservation and increase of blessings.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this story. How often do we, too, become bored with the ease and comfort Allah has granted us? How often do we wish for more, not out of need, but out of pride and restlessness? The people of Saba’ had everything—security, abundance, and closeness to one another—yet they threw it all away because they failed to appreciate it. Their story is a timeless reminder that every blessing is a trust from Allah, and ingratitude is a poison that destroys nations and individuals alike.

Let this verse inspire you to be among the *ṣabbār* (patient) and *shakūr* (grateful). Be patient in times of difficulty, knowing that Allah tests those He loves. Be grateful in times of ease, knowing that thankfulness opens the doors of more blessings. And never let arrogance or envy creep into your heart, for they are the very traits that brought down a mighty people. The Qur’an is not just a book to be read—it is a guide to be lived. Let the story of Saba’ be a light on your path, drawing you closer to your Lord and filling your heart with humility and gratitude.

📜 Verse 17-21 — Saba

[By] that We repaid them because they disbelieved. And do We [thus] repay except the ungrateful?
And We placed between them and the cities which We had blessed [many] visible cities. And We determined between them the [distances of] journey, [saying], "Travel between them by night or day in safety."
But [insolently] they said, "Our Lord, lengthen the distance between our journeys," and wronged themselves, so We made them narrations and dispersed them in total dispersion. Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
And Iblees had already confirmed through them his assumption, so they followed him, except for a party of believers.
And he had over them no authority except [it was decreed] that We might make evident who believes in the Hereafter from who is thereof in doubt. And your Lord, over all things, is Guardian.
