Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Quran zahirah (قُرًى ظَاهِرَةً): Visible, connected towns that are so close together that one can be seen from the other.
  • Qaddarna (وَقَدَّرْنَا): We precisely measured and proportioned the journey, making it easy and well-paced.
  • Aminin (آمِنِينَ): Secure and safe, free from fear of enemies, hunger, or thirst.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, in His infinite mercy and generosity, recounts a great blessing He bestowed upon the people of Saba, who lived in Yemen. He placed between their land and the blessed towns of Sham (Greater Syria) — a region blessed with abundant water, fertile soil, and countless bounties — a chain of connected, visible towns. These towns were so close together that travelers could see the next town from the one they were in, making the journey effortless and pleasant.

Allah precisely measured the travel between these towns, so that a traveler would set out in the morning and reach a town by midday, or set out in the afternoon and arrive by evening. Each town was equipped with water springs and greenery, providing rest and provisions along the way. This was a divine arrangement that eliminated hardship from their journeys entirely.

Then Allah addressed them, saying: "Travel through these towns by night or by day, in complete safety and peace." They were protected from enemy attacks, from hunger, and from thirst — a life of ease and tranquility that most nations could only dream of.

This verse is a powerful reminder of how Allah rewards gratitude with abundance. When a people are thankful for His blessings, He increases them; and when they become arrogant and ungrateful, they lose even what they had. The story of Saba serves as a timeless lesson: the blessings we enjoy are not merely coincidences — they are divine gifts meant to draw us closer to our Creator. Yet, how quickly we forget! How often do we take for granted the security, the food on our tables, and the ease of our travels, without pausing to thank the One who arranged it all?

Reflect on your own life: the safe roads you travel, the homes that shelter you, the meals that sustain you — all are signs of Allah's mercy. Let this verse inspire you to look around and see the countless "visible towns" of blessings in your own journey. And let it move you to a life of gratitude, for gratitude is the key that unlocks even greater blessings. Allah says elsewhere: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]" (Ibrahim 14:7). So be among the grateful, and watch how your Lord opens doors you never imagined.

📜 Verse 16-20 — Saba

But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees.
[By] that We repaid them because they disbelieved. And do We [thus] repay except the ungrateful?
And We placed between them and the cities which We had blessed [many] visible cities. And We determined between them the [distances of] journey, [saying], "Travel between them by night or day in safety."
But [insolently] they said, "Our Lord, lengthen the distance between our journeys," and wronged themselves, so We made them narrations and dispersed them in total dispersion. Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
And Iblees had already confirmed through them his assumption, so they followed him, except for a party of believers.
