Word Meanings:
- Az-Zājirāt (الزاجرات): The angels who drive and repel.
- Zajr (زجرًا): Driving away with force and sternness, i.e., pushing something forward or dispersing it with command and authority.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the angels who drive the clouds and push them along by His command, directing them to wherever He wills—whether to water a parched land or to withhold rain from another. These angels act as obedient servants, executing the divine will with precision and power. The oath here draws attention to the magnificent order of the universe, where even the clouds are managed by Allah’s appointed forces, demonstrating His absolute sovereignty and control over all creation.
This verse follows the preceding one, where Allah swears by the angels who stand in ranks, and is followed by another oath by the angels who recite the remembrance of Allah. Together, these oaths establish the greatness of Allah’s dominion and the honor of His angels, who are ever-occupied with worship and obedience. The purpose of these oaths is to affirm the oneness of Allah and to call humanity to sincere devotion to Him alone.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this scene: angels—mighty and obedient—busy themselves with the task of driving clouds across the skies, not by their own will, but by the command of their Lord. This is but one of countless signs of Allah’s power. If the clouds move and rain falls by His decree, then surely your affairs, your sustenance, and your very life are in His hands alone. So why turn to anyone other than Him? Why place your trust in weak creatures when the Almighty is the One who manages everything?
This verse invites you to recognize the majesty of Allah and to respond with humility and gratitude. When you see the rain fall and the earth flourish, let your heart remember the angels who drove those clouds, and above them, the Lord who commanded it all. Let this strengthen your faith, purify your worship, and draw you closer to the One who deserves all praise. Indeed, in the movement of clouds and the falling of rain are signs for those who reflect—so be among them, and let your heart find peace in submission to your Creator.
