Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- At-Tāliyāt (التاليات): Those who recite or follow continuously — referring to the angels who recite the remembrance of Allah.
- Dhikr (ذكرًا): The remembrance of Allah, including His revealed words and scriptures.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the angels who recite the remembrance of Allah and His divine words. These are the noble angels who continuously engage in the recitation of Allah's revelation, glorifying Him and conveying His messages. This oath comes as part of a series of oaths in which Allah swears by different groups of angels — those who arrange themselves in ranks, those who drive the clouds by His command, and those who recite His remembrance — to emphasize the certainty and importance of what follows.
The profound wisdom here is that Allah, the Creator of all things, may swear by whatever He wills from His creation to draw attention to its significance and to affirm a greater truth. However, for human beings, it is strictly forbidden to swear by anything other than Allah. Swearing by other than Allah constitutes shirk (associating partners with Allah), because an oath is an act of veneration and glorification that belongs exclusively to Allah alone.
This verse beautifully highlights the honor and status of the angels who dedicate themselves to the remembrance of Allah. It serves as an inspiring reminder for us as believers: if the angels — who are sinless and constantly engaged in worship — devote themselves to reciting the remembrance of Allah, how much more should we, as human beings who are in need of Allah's mercy and forgiveness, strive to keep our tongues moist with the remembrance of our Lord? The recitation of the Quran and the remembrance of Allah are among the most beloved acts of worship, drawing the believer closer to his Creator and bringing tranquility to the heart.
Let this verse inspire you to make the remembrance of Allah a constant companion in your daily life. For indeed, the hearts find rest only in the remembrance of Allah, and those who remember their Lord standing, sitting, and lying on their sides are promised forgiveness and a great reward.
