Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- As-Saffat (الصَّافَّاتِ): The angels who stand in rows.
- Saffan (صَفًّا): In ordered, continuous ranks, one after another without gaps.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this opening verse of Surah As-Saffat, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the angels who stand in perfectly arranged rows, like the rows of worshippers in prayer. These are the noble angels who fill the heavens in disciplined ranks, never breaking formation, never stepping out of line, completely devoted to their Lord's command. Their order reflects the perfect harmony of the universe, where every being submits to Allah's will.
This divine oath draws our attention to the magnificent reality of the unseen world—the angels who tirelessly worship Allah, standing in rows before Him, glorifying Him day and night without fatigue. Just as they maintain their ranks in obedience, we as believers are called to stand united in our worship, in our prayers, and in our devotion to Allah, side by side like a solid structure.
The oath itself teaches us a profound lesson: Allah may swear by whatever He wills of His creation, for everything belongs to Him and bears witness to His greatness. But as for us, we must never swear by anything other than Allah, for swearing by created beings or objects is a form of associating partners with Him—a grave sin that diminishes our tawhid (monotheism).
This verse invites you to reflect: if the angels, who are sinless and ever-obedient, stand in such perfect rows of worship, how much more should we—who are in constant need of Allah's mercy and forgiveness—strive to establish our prayers, unite our ranks, and submit wholeheartedly to our Creator? Let this be a gentle reminder that your place in the rows of worshippers is not just a physical position, but a spiritual commitment to order, discipline, and sincere devotion to the One who deserves all praise.
