Word Meanings:

(Al-Mala'u): The chiefs, leaders, and prominent figures of a community.
(Imshu): Literally "walk," but here it means to persist, proceed, and remain steadfast upon a path.
(Isbiru): Be patient, firm, and unwavering.
(Alihatikum): Your gods (the idols they worshipped).
(Yurad): Something intended, desired, or planned for a purpose.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse reveals the reaction of the influential leaders of Quraysh when they saw the growing number of believers around the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They did not merely reject the call privately—rather, they sprang into action, moving among their people to rally them against the message of monotheism.

Their strategy was clear and calculated. They urged their followers to remain steadfast upon the worship of their idols, telling them: "Stay the course, do not waver, and do not be swayed by Muhammad's call." They framed the Prophet's message as a political maneuver rather than a divine truth, claiming that his call to worship one God was simply a scheme to gain leadership and dominance over them. They said, "This is something intended"—meaning that this whole affair was a planned bid for power, not a genuine revelation.

They further argued that they had never heard such a call in the religion of their forefathers, nor in Christianity, and therefore dismissed it as fabrication and falsehood. Their arrogance and attachment to ancestral traditions blinded them from seeing the clear truth that was being presented to them.

A Call to Reflection:

This scene from history carries a profound lesson for us today. How often do we reject truth simply because it challenges our comfort zones, our inherited customs, or our social status? The leaders of Quraysh were not ignorant people—they were intelligent and articulate, yet their pride and love of position prevented them from accepting the truth.

The beauty of Islam is that it calls us to free ourselves from all forms of servitude—whether to idols, to social pressure, or to our own desires—and submit only to the One who created us. When you embrace this message with a sincere heart, you will find a peace that no material gain can provide. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was not seeking power; he was seeking your salvation and your connection with your Creator.

So ask yourself: Are you like those who persist upon falsehood out of habit, or are you among those who seek the truth with an open heart? The door of guidance remains open, and the light of faith is brighter than any darkness of ignorance. Let not the opinions of others, no matter how influential, keep you away from the truth that brings you closer to Allah.

And they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, "This is a magician and a liar.
Has he made the gods [only] one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing."
And the eminent among them went forth, [saying], "Continue, and be patient over [the defense of] your gods. Indeed, this is a thing intended.
We have not heard of this in the latest religion. This is not but a fabrication.
Has the message been revealed to him out of [all of] us?" Rather, they are in doubt about My message. Rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment.
