Word Meanings:

  • Yashroona (يَشْرُونَ): They sell or exchange. In this context, it means they trade away one thing in return for another.
  • Al-Hayat al-Dunya (الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا): The worldly life with all its fleeting pleasures, wealth, status, and temporary comforts.
  • Bil-Akhirah (بِالْآخِرَةِ): In exchange for the Hereafter — meaning its eternal rewards, Paradise, and Allah's pleasure.
  • Fayuqtal (فَيُقْتَلْ): He is killed (i.e., martyred in the path of Allah).
  • Aw Yaghlib (أَوْ يَغْلِبْ): Or he prevails and gains victory over the enemy.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Most High, addresses the believers with a noble call to action. He commands those who have truly understood the reality of this world and the next to fight in His cause — not for personal gain, not for nationalism, not for revenge, but purely so that the word of Allah may be supreme and His religion may prevail. The verse describes these fighters as those who "sell" the life of this world in exchange for the Hereafter. This is a powerful metaphor: they have made a transaction, and they know exactly what they are buying. They are trading something that is temporary, perishable, and ultimately worthless, for something that is eternal, everlasting, and of infinite value. They have looked at the fleeting pleasures of this life and found them lacking; they have set their eyes on the eternal bliss of Paradise and the pleasure of their Lord, and they have made their choice with full conviction.

The verse then delivers a magnificent promise that removes all fear and hesitation. Allah says that whoever fights in His path — whether he is killed or emerges victorious — will receive a great reward. This is a profound reassurance: the believer cannot lose. If he is martyred, he attains the highest station of honor, Paradise, and the pleasure of Allah. If he triumphs, he gains victory in this world and the reward of the Hereafter. In both scenarios, the outcome is success. There is no third option of loss for the one who fights sincerely for Allah's cause. This is the beauty of Islam: the believer is guaranteed success, whether through martyrdom or victory, because his intention is pure and his action is for the sake of his Lord.

This verse is a timeless call to every believer to examine their priorities. Are we among those who "sell" this world for the Hereafter? Are we willing to sacrifice our comfort, our time, our wealth, and even our lives for the sake of Allah? The promise is clear and certain: the reward is great, and the transaction is one that no wise person would refuse. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who race towards goodness, who stand firm for the truth, and who understand that the true life is the life of the Hereafter. The pleasure of Allah and the gardens of Paradise are worth every sacrifice we make in this world. So let us strive, let us fight against our own souls' desires, and let us support the truth in whatever capacity we can — for the reward with Allah is truly magnificent.

📜 Verse 72-76 — An-Nisa

And indeed, there is among you he who lingers behind; and if disaster strikes you, he says, "Allah has favored me in that I was not present with them."
But if bounty comes to you from Allah, he will surely say, as if there had never been between you and him any affection. "Oh, I wish I had been with them so I could have attained a great attainment."
So let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. And he who fights in the cause of Allah and is killed or achieves victory - We will bestow upon him a great reward.
And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?"
Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut. So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.
