And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?"

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mustad'afin (المستضعفين): The oppressed and weak ones who are unable to defend themselves or escape from harm.
  • Al-Wildan (الولدان): Young children who have not yet reached maturity.
  • Al-Qaryah (القرية): The town/city — specifically referring here to Makkah.
  • Min ladunka (من لدنك): From Your own presence — meaning from Your special grace and mercy.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, addresses the believers with a profound and stirring question: *"And what is [the matter] with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah?"* This is not merely an inquiry — it is a loving rebuke, a call to awaken the conscience of every believer. What could possibly hold you back, O believers, when the cause is so noble and the need is so urgent?

The verse then expands the scope of this call to arms, revealing that fighting in Allah's cause is not only about defending your own faith and honor — it is also about defending the helpless and the oppressed among humanity. Allah specifically mentions the weak and oppressed men, women, and children — those who have been wronged, whose rights have been trampled, and who have no means or power to protect themselves.

These oppressed ones are described as being in a town whose people are unjust — and this refers to Makkah at that time, where the polytheists had persecuted the believers, prevented them from migrating, and subjected them to relentless harm. Despite their weakness, these oppressed believers did not lose hope in their Lord. Instead, they raised their hands in sincere supplication, crying out: *"Our Lord, take us out of this city whose people are oppressors, and appoint for us from Yourself a protector, and appoint for us from Yourself a helper."*

This beautiful du'a teaches us several profound lessons:

First: When you are oppressed and powerless, your greatest weapon is your connection with Allah. Turn to Him with humility and sincerity, for He alone can change your circumstances.

Second: The oppressed believers asked for two things: a wali (protector) to look after their affairs and guide them, and a naseer (helper) to defend them against their enemies. This shows us that we should seek both guidance and support — one who leads us on the right path, and one who stands with us in times of difficulty.

Third: Allah answered their call. When Makkah was conquered, the Prophet ﷺ appointed 'Attab ibn Asid as governor over them, and he ensured justice was established — the oppressed were given their rights, and the oppressors were held accountable.

A Call to Action for Every Believer:

This verse is not confined to the past — it speaks to us today, in every time and place. As Muslims, we are called to stand against oppression wherever it occurs. When we see our brothers and sisters suffering — whether in Palestine, Myanmar, Kashmir, or any other land of injustice — we cannot remain silent or passive. We must ask ourselves: *"What is preventing us from helping them?"*

Our help may take many forms: through our wealth, our words, our advocacy, our prayers, or — when necessary and legitimate — through physical struggle. The Prophet ﷺ said: *"Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith."*

Let this verse ignite within you a passion for justice and a deep sense of responsibility toward the oppressed. Know that Allah hears the cries of His servants, and He will never abandon those who sincerely call upon Him. Be among those who answer the call — be a protector and a helper for the weak, and you will find Allah's protection and help in return.

May Allah make us among those who stand for justice, who defend the oppressed, and who are counted as His sincere servants. Ameen.

📜 Verse 73-77 — An-Nisa

But if bounty comes to you from Allah, he will surely say, as if there had never been between you and him any affection. "Oh, I wish I had been with them so I could have attained a great attainment."
So let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. And he who fights in the cause of Allah and is killed or achieves victory - We will bestow upon him a great reward.
And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?"
Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut. So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.
Have you not seen those who were told, "Restrain your hands [from fighting] and establish prayer and give zakah"? But then when fighting was ordained for them, at once a party of them feared men as they fear Allah or with [even] greater fear. They said, "Our Lord, why have You decreed upon us fighting? If only You had postponed [it for] us for a short time." Say, The enjoyment of this world is little, and the Hereafter is better for he who fears Allah. And injustice will not be done to you, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed]."
