Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- فَضْلٌ (Fadl): Bounty, favor, or blessing from Allah—here referring specifically to victory, safety, and war spoils.
- مَوَدَّةٌ (Mawaddah): Affection, friendship, or close bond of love and companionship.
- فَأَفُوزَ (Fa-afuza): So that I may attain success, triumph, or a great share of the good outcome.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the true nature of the hypocrites who lag behind when jihad (struggle in Allah's cause) is required. When the believers face hardship, loss, or martyrdom, these hypocrites stay away and feel relieved that they did not participate. But when Allah grants the believers a victory, safety, or spoils of war, the same hypocrites suddenly speak as if there had never been any bond of friendship or affection between them and the believers. They exclaim with regret and envy: "Oh, if only I had been with them, I would have achieved a great triumph!"
The verse highlights a painful contradiction in their behavior. They pretend to be part of the Muslim community, yet when it comes to sacrifice, they disappear; and when it comes to gain, they wish they had been present. Their regret is not for missing the opportunity to please Allah or to earn His reward in the Hereafter—it is purely for missing out on worldly gains. This is the hallmark of weak faith and hypocrisy: caring only about material benefits while neglecting the duties that come with true belief.
A Call to Sincerity and Sacrifice:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. Ask yourself: Are you with Allah in times of ease and hardship alike? Do you rush to support His cause when it requires your wealth, your time, or your comfort—or do you only appear when there is something to gain?
True faith is not a fair-weather companion. It is a steadfast commitment that carries you through the heat of battle, the patience of waiting, and the gratitude of victory. The hypocrite's regret on the Day of Judgment will be far greater than any worldly loss—for they will see the eternal rewards of the believers and wish they had been among them, not for spoils of this world, but for the everlasting bliss of Paradise.
So, my brother and sister in Islam, do not be among those who only remember Allah in times of need or who only seek His favors without carrying His trust. Be among the sincere ones who give their all for Allah, knowing that every sacrifice in His path is never wasted. The true triumph is not in the spoils of war, but in the pleasure of Allah and the gardens of eternity. Strive for that victory, and you will never taste regret.
