Word Meanings:

  • Muṣībah (مصيبة): Any calamity, affliction, or hardship that befalls a person—whether in their health, wealth, family, or religion.
  • Kasabat aydīkum (كسبت أيديكم): What your hands have earned—meaning the sins, transgressions, and wrongdoings committed by a person.
  • Yaʿfū (يعفو): He pardons, forgives, and overlooks.

Explanation of the Verse:

O people, every trial and hardship that strikes you—whether in your bodies, your wealth, your children, or your affairs—is a direct consequence of the sins and misdeeds that your own hands have committed. It is the just recompense of your actions in this world, a reminder from your Lord that He sees all and that nothing escapes His wisdom. Yet, in His infinite mercy and compassion, Allah does not hold you accountable for every sin you have committed. He overlooks and pardons the vast majority of your faults, sparing you from their consequences. So while a portion of your misdeeds may manifest as trials in this life, the greater portion is forgiven, and His mercy far outweighs His justice.

This verse is a profound call to self-reflection. When hardship strikes, the believer does not despair or blame fate blindly—rather, they look inward, recognize their shortcomings, and turn back to Allah in repentance. It is a reminder that this world is a place of testing, and every difficulty carries within it a lesson and an opportunity for spiritual growth. At the same time, it fills the heart with hope: for if Allah punishes for some sins in this fleeting world, He forgives far more, and His mercy is vast enough to wipe away the sins of a lifetime for those who sincerely seek His forgiveness.

So, dear reader, let this verse be a source of comfort and motivation. When you face hardship, know that it is not random—it is a sign from your Creator, inviting you to purify your soul and draw closer to Him. And when you experience ease, know that it is His forgiveness covering your many faults. Never lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for He says, “And He pardons much.” Turn to Him with a sincere heart, and you will find that His mercy embraces all things.

📜 Verse 28-32 — Ash-Shura

And it is He who sends down the rain after they had despaired and spreads His mercy. And He is the Protector, the Praiseworthy.
And of his signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and what He has dispersed throughout them of creatures. And He, for gathering them when He wills, is competent.
And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.
And you will not cause failure [to Allah] upon the earth. And you have not besides Allah any protector or helper.
And of His signs are the ships in the sea, like mountains.
