📖 English Meaning
And among them, [O Muhammad], are those who listen to you, until when they depart from you, they say to those who were given knowledge, "What has he said just now?" Those are the ones of whom Allah has sealed over their hearts and who have followed their [own] desires.

Key Words and Phrases:

  • يَسْتَمِعُ إِلَيْكَ (*yastami'u ilayka*): Listens to you (but without any intention of understanding or accepting).
  • آنِفًا (*anifan*): Just now, recently, a moment ago.
  • أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ (*utul-'ilm*): Those who have been given knowledge (i.e., the learned companions of the Prophet ﷺ).
  • طَبَعَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ (*taba'a Allahu 'ala qulubihim*): Allah has set a seal upon their hearts (a metaphor for the complete closure of the heart to guidance and truth).
  • اتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ (*ittaba'u ahwa'ahum*): They followed their own desires and whims.

Explanation of the Verse:

Among the hypocrites, O Prophet, there are those who sit in your gatherings and listen to your words, but their listening is not a listening of the heart. They hear with their ears, yet their minds are absent, and their souls are filled with arrogance and disregard. They do not listen to learn, to be guided, or to submit; rather, they listen with mockery and negligence.

When they leave your presence, they turn to the sincere scholars among the Companions—those who were blessed with deep understanding of Allah's Book—and ask with sarcasm and ridicule: "What did he say just now?" As if they had heard nothing at all, or as if his words were not worthy of their attention. This question is not a question of one seeking knowledge, but a mockery of one who belittles the revelation.

These are the ones upon whose hearts Allah has placed a seal—a seal of misguidance and hypocrisy—so that no light of truth can enter, and no goodness can reach them. They have followed their own desires, and their desires have led them away from the path of guidance into the darkness of disbelief and error. Their fate is sealed because they chose their whims over the truth, and Allah left them to their own choice.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound description. The hypocrites heard the words of the best of creation, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whose speech was the very revelation of Allah—a speech that guides to every good and warns against every evil. Yet, because their hearts were sealed and their desires dominated them, they gained nothing from that blessed gathering.

How different are the believers! When they hear the Qur'an, their hearts tremble with awe, their faith increases, and they hasten to act upon what they have learned. The same words that bring light to the believers are but a burden to the hypocrites, because the difference lies not in the words, but in the state of the heart.

Let this verse be a reminder to you: purify your heart, humble your soul, and approach the Qur'an with sincerity and attentiveness. Do not let your desires close the doors of your heart to the truth. For the one who listens with an open heart, every verse becomes a treasure; but the one who turns away in arrogance, even the greatest words will pass him by without effect.

O Allah, open our hearts to the light of Your Book, and do not let our desires overcome us. Make us among those who listen to the word and follow the best of it. Ameen.

📜 Verse 14-18 — Muhammad

So is he who is on clear evidence from his Lord like him to whom the evil of his work has been made attractive and they follow their [own] desires?
Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?
And among them, [O Muhammad], are those who listen to you, until when they depart from you, they say to those who were given knowledge, "What has he said just now?" Those are the ones of whom Allah has sealed over their hearts and who have followed their [own] desires.
And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.
Then do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then what good to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance?
