Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Ma taqaddama min dhanbika" — Your past sins (those that occurred before this conquest).
  • "Wa ma ta'akhkhara" — Your future sins (those that might occur after it).
  • "Yutimma ni'matahu" — He completes His favor upon you (by granting you victory and establishing your religion).
  • "Siratan mustaqeeman" — A straight path (the clear, upright way of Islam with no deviation).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse follows the mention of the great conquest (the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah), which was a decisive victory for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the believers. Allah tells us that He granted this triumph so that He might forgive the Prophet’s past and future sins—a unique honor bestowed upon him, signifying absolute purity and divine pleasure. The forgiveness is tied to the immense acts of obedience, patience, and hardship endured during this event, which elevated the Prophet’s rank and erased any shortcoming.

Furthermore, Allah completes His favor upon the Prophet by making His religion manifest, strengthening him against his enemies, and granting him honor in this life and the Hereafter. Then, He guides him to a straight path—the path of Islam, which is free from any crookedness or error. This guidance is not just a one-time direction but a continuous confirmation and steadfastness upon the truth, ensuring that the Prophet remains firm in conveying the message and leading his nation with wisdom.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a profound reminder of Allah’s boundless mercy and generosity. If the Prophet—who was sinless and beloved to Allah—received such honor and forgiveness through the blessings of patience and sacrifice, how much more should we, as ordinary believers, strive to draw closer to Allah through our own acts of obedience and perseverance? The conquest of Hudaybiyyah teaches us that apparent setbacks can be hidden victories, and that Allah’s plan is always better than our expectations.

Let this inspire you to trust in Allah during trials, to seek His forgiveness sincerely, and to walk the straight path with confidence. For He who guided His Prophet will also guide you if you turn to Him with a pure heart. Embrace the beauty of Islam, for it is the path that leads to eternal success, and let every difficulty you face be a stepping stone toward His mercy and pleasure.
