Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fatahna (فَتَحْنَا): We have granted victory, opened, or decided. In this context, it refers to a decisive opening or triumph granted by Allah.
- Fathan Mubeenan (فَتْحًا مُّبِينًا): A clear, manifest, and evident victory or opening—one whose significance is unmistakable and whose results are plainly visible.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly, assuring him that Allah has granted him a victory that is clear and undeniable. The majority of scholars agree that this refers to the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, which took place in the 6th year after the Hijrah. Although some might have seen it as a mere truce or even a setback, Allah Himself calls it a "clear victory"—and indeed, its fruits proved that.
Through this treaty, a period of peace and security was established between the Muslims and the Quraysh of Mecca. People could now move freely, converse, and exchange ideas without the constant threat of war. This opened the doors for the message of Islam to spread far and wide. During the two years that followed the treaty, more people embraced Islam than in the entire previous period of the Prophet's mission—so much so that it was said that "no victory in Islam was greater than this." The peace allowed delegations to come and go, and the truth of Islam became known to countless hearts, leading them to enter the religion in large numbers. Thus, what appeared outwardly as a retreat was, in reality, a monumental triumph—a victory of peace, wisdom, and divine planning.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Beloved reader, this verse teaches us a profound lesson: victory is not always measured by apparent conquest or overwhelming force. Sometimes, Allah grants success through paths that seem humble or even difficult to understand at first. The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was a testament to the power of patience, wisdom, and trust in Allah's promise. It reminds us that when we sincerely submit to Allah's will and follow the guidance of His Messenger, even what looks like a compromise can be the gateway to immense good. This is the beauty of Islam—it teaches us to see beyond the surface, to trust in Allah's wisdom, and to remain steadfast, knowing that His promise is true. Let this verse inspire you to place your full reliance on Allah, for He opens doors that no one can close, and His victories are always clear to those who reflect.
