📖 English Meaning
O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram. And whoever of you kills it intentionally - the penalty is an equivalent from sacrificial animals to what he killed, as judged by two just men among you as an offering [to Allah] delivered to the Ka'bah, or an expiation: the feeding of needy people or the equivalent of that in fasting, that he may taste the consequence of his deed. Allah has pardoned what is past; but whoever returns [to violation], then Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Hurun (حُرُم): The plural of *haram*, meaning those in a state of *ihram* — either for Hajj (pilgrimage) or 'Umrah (lesser pilgrimage).
  • Al-Sayd (الصَّيْد): Wild game animals or birds that are permissible to hunt outside the sacred state.
  • Al-Na'am (النَّعَم): Livestock — camels, cattle, and sheep/goats.
  • Hadyan (هَدْيًا): An animal offered as a sacrifice at the Sacred House (the Ka'bah in Makkah).
  • 'Adl (عَدْل): Equivalence or the equivalent of something, especially from a different category.
  • Wabāl (وَبَال): The severe consequence or harmful outcome of an action.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and who strive to implement His law! Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, addresses you with a command that protects the sanctity of His sacred rites and the balance of His creation: Do not kill wild game while you are in a state of ihram — whether for Hajj or 'Umrah — and this prohibition also applies to those within the sacred precincts of the Haram (the Sanctuary of Makkah).

This command is not merely a legal restriction; it is a spiritual training. It teaches the believer self-restraint, respect for the symbols of Allah, and mindfulness that even the animals of the land are under His care. When you enter the state of ihram, you are a guest of Allah, and a guest does not violate the sanctity of the host's domain.

If any of you kills game intentionally, then a precise and just reparation is required. The offender must offer an animal from livestock — a camel, cow, or sheep — that closely resembles the game killed in size and form. This equivalence is not left to personal whim; rather, two just and upright Muslims — known for their integrity and knowledge — are to judge and determine the most suitable replacement. This judgment ensures fairness and prevents any attempt to evade responsibility.

The reparation takes one of three forms, giving the offender a choice based on their circumstances:

  1. Sending the animal to the Ka'bah — it must reach the Haram in Makkah, be slaughtered there, and its meat distributed to the poor of the Sanctuary.
  2. Feeding the poor — the value of the equivalent animal may be used to purchase food, given to the needy of the Haram, with each poor person receiving approximately half a *sā'* (about 1.5 kg) of staple food.
  3. Fasting — if the offender cannot afford the food, they may fast one day for each half *sā'* of food that would have been given.

Allah states the wisdom behind this reparation: "So that he may taste the severe consequence of his deed." This is not punishment for its own sake, but a means of purification and awakening — a reminder that every transgression carries weight and that the believer must be conscious of their actions at all times.

Then comes a door of hope and mercy: "Allah has pardoned what is past." For those who committed this act before the prohibition was revealed, or before they knew the ruling, Allah's forgiveness is vast and complete. This is the beauty of Islam — it does not burden people for what they did in ignorance, but opens the door of repentance.

Yet, the verse closes with a serious warning: "And whoever returns to it, Allah will take vengeance upon him." This is for those who, after clear knowledge and the establishment of the law, deliberately persist in transgression. They should know that Allah is Mighty, Possessor of vengeance — His power is absolute, and no one can escape His justice. His might is not merely punitive; it is a guarantee that His law will be upheld and that His creation will not descend into chaos.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear believer, see how Islam balances mercy with justice! It gives you a path to correct your mistakes, a way to purify your soul, and a promise of forgiveness for the past. Yet it also reminds you that Allah's law is not a game — it is a serious covenant. This verse teaches you that even in matters that seem small, like hunting an animal, your obedience to Allah matters. How much greater, then, is the reward for those who guard their tongues, their eyes, and their hearts in obedience to Him?

Embrace this beautiful religion with sincerity. When you err, do not despair — repent, make amends, and move forward. And when you know the truth, hold fast to it with firmness, for Allah loves those who are mindful of Him. The gates of His mercy are always open, but His justice is also real. Let this verse be a reminder that every action has a consequence, and the best consequence is the pleasure of Allah and His eternal Paradise.

📜 Verse 93-97 — Al-Maidah

There is not upon those who believe and do righteousness [any] blame concerning what they have eaten [in the past] if they [now] fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds, and then fear Allah and believe, and then fear Allah and do good; and Allah loves the doers of good.
O you who have believed, Allah will surely test you through something of the game that your hands and spears [can] reach, that Allah may make evident those who fear Him unseen. And whoever transgresses after that - for him is a painful punishment.
Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers, but forbidden to you is game from the land as long as you are in the state of ihram. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered.
Allah has made the Ka'bah, the Sacred House, standing for the people and [has sanctified] the sacred months and the sacrificial animals and the garlands [by which they are identified]. That is so you may know that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth and that Allah is Knowing of all things.
