Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Sayd (الصيد): Hunting or catching game, specifically land game (wild animals) in this context.
- Tanālahu aydīkum (تَنَالُهُ أَيْدِيكُمْ): That which your hands can reach — referring to small game, eggs, or young animals that cannot easily escape.
- Wa rimāḥukum (وَرِمَاحُكُمْ): And your spears — referring to larger game that requires weapons to catch.
- Yakhāfuhu bil-ghayb (يَخَافُهُ بِالْغَيْبِ): Fears Allah in the unseen — i.e., fears Him without seeing Him, out of sincere faith and certainty that Allah sees all.
- Iʿtadā (اعْتَدَىٰ): Transgressed the limits — i.e., violated the prohibition of hunting while in the state of iḥrām (sacred pilgrimage state).
- ʿAdhābun alīm (عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ): A painful punishment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and submitted to His command! Allah, in His infinite wisdom, is testing you with a portion of the hunt — land game that comes unusually close to you during your state of iḥrām (during Hajj or ʿUmrah). The small and weak of these animals come so near that your bare hands could seize them, while the larger ones come within reach of your spears. This is not a coincidence; it is a deliberate trial from your Lord.
Why does Allah test you in this way? To make manifest — in a way that is evident to all creation — who truly fears Him in the unseen, without seeing Him, and who holds back from what He has forbidden out of sincere reverence and certainty that Allah is fully aware of every deed. The one whose heart is filled with taqwā (God-consciousness) will restrain his hand even when the prey is within easy reach, because his love for Allah and his fear of Allah's displeasure outweigh his worldly desires. This is the essence of faith: obedience when no one is watching, and restraint when temptation is strongest.
So whoever, after this clear clarification and divine warning, transgresses the limits by hunting while in the state of iḥrām, then for him is a painful punishment — both in this world through the prescribed penalties and in the Hereafter through the severe consequences of defying Allah's command.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear believer, reflect deeply on this verse! Allah is telling you that your faith is tested precisely at the moment when the forbidden thing becomes easiest to attain. The wild animal that comes within your hand's reach is not merely a coincidence — it is a divine examination of your heart's sincerity. When you restrain yourself for Allah's sake while fully capable of taking what is before you, you prove that your īmān is genuine, not merely a claim on your tongue.
This is the beauty of Islam: it trains you to be conscious of Allah at all times, in public and in private, in ease and in difficulty. The one who fears Allah in the unseen has attained the highest rank of faith, for he worships Allah as if he sees Him, and even though he cannot see Him, he knows that Allah sees him. Let this verse inspire you to strengthen your taqwā, to remember that every moment of restraint for Allah's sake is a treasure that will be rewarded beyond measure. And know that Allah's tests are always accompanied by His mercy — for He only tests you to elevate you, to purify you, and to draw you closer to Him. So embrace His commands with love and submission, and you will find peace in this life and everlasting bliss in the next.
