Translation — Tafsir
Those who avoid the major sins and immoral deeds—except for minor lapses and small faults that occur rarely and are not persisted upon. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He knows you best when He created you from the earth and when you were embryos in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim purity for yourselves; He knows best who is truly righteous.
Key Words Explained:
- Kabā'ir al-ithm (كبائر الإثم): The major sins, the gravest offenses against Allah, including shirk (associating partners with Allah) and other severe transgressions.
- Al-Fawāḥish (الفواحش): Immoral acts and indecencies—those deeds that are extremely shameful and forbidden, such as adultery, theft, and slander.
- Al-Lamam (اللمم): Minor sins and small slips that a person may commit occasionally without persistence—like an accidental glance or a fleeting thought—which are forgivable when one avoids the major sins and repents.
- Tuzakkū (تزكوا): To praise oneself, to claim personal purity or righteousness.
The Interpretation:
In this verse, Allah describes the true believers—those who distance themselves from the great sins and shameful immoralities, yet may occasionally fall into minor faults. These small lapses, when not persisted upon and when accompanied by sincere repentance and the avoidance of major sins, are covered by Allah's immense mercy. The verse then delivers a profound reassurance: your Lord's forgiveness is vast beyond measure. He does not rush to punish; rather, He opens the doors of repentance and pardon for those who turn back to Him.
Allah reminds us of His complete knowledge of our nature and circumstances. He knew us before we existed—when He created our father Adam from the dust of the earth, and when we were hidden embryos in our mothers' wombs, developing stage by stage under His watchful care. Nothing about us is hidden from Him: our struggles, our weaknesses, our sincere efforts, and our true intentions.
Therefore, the verse concludes with a beautiful and humbling command: do not praise yourselves or claim purity, for you do not know what is in your own hearts as Allah does. True righteousness is known only to Him. He alone knows who genuinely fears Him, obeys His commands, and avoids His prohibitions. So leave the judgment to the All-Knowing, and focus on sincere action rather than self-congratulation.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a message of hope and humility. No matter how many times you stumble, if you avoid the major sins and turn back to Allah with a sincere heart, His forgiveness is vast enough to embrace you. Do not despair of His mercy, and do not let Shaytan convince you that your sins are too great. At the same time, do not become arrogant about your own deeds—for the most righteous person is the one who fears Allah most, not the one who boasts the loudest. Let this verse inspire you to strive for excellence while remaining humble, knowing that your Lord sees your efforts and knows your heart better than you do. Embrace His mercy, and let your hope in Him drive you toward a life of obedience and sincerity.
