Word Meanings:

  • Tawallā (تَوَلَّىٰ): Turned away, withdrew, or abandoned. In this context, it means to turn away from obedience to Allah and from the path of faith after having come close to it.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a rhetorical question that carries a tone of astonishment and rebuke: "Have you seen the one who turned away?" It points to a specific person who had drawn near to Islam and its guidance, but then retreated, turned his back, and abandoned the path of faith. The verse highlights the ugliness of this person's state—how someone could come so close to the truth, taste its sweetness, and then deliberately walk away from it.

The verse also refers to one who turned away from obedience to Allah, giving a small portion of his wealth in charity, then stopped and withheld his help from others. This illustrates a pattern of half-hearted commitment—doing a little good, then cutting off the flow of kindness and generosity. The underlying message is a critique of inconsistency in faith and practice: approaching the truth, then retreating; giving a little, then withholding.

This rhetorical question serves as a wake-up call, inviting the listener to reflect on the pitiful condition of such a person. It exposes the contradiction in human behavior when one turns away from the very source of guidance and mercy after having been so close to it.

Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful scene. The Qur'an is not merely narrating history—it is holding up a mirror to our own hearts. How often do we come close to Allah, feel the sweetness of prayer, taste the joy of charity, and then allow the distractions of this world to pull us back? How often do we begin a good deed with enthusiasm, only to abandon it halfway?

This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder: do not be like the one who turns away after coming near. When Allah opens a door of goodness for you, walk through it with steadfastness. When your heart softens toward faith, nurture it with consistent worship and sincere charity. Do not let Shaytan steal the treasure you have already found. The path of faith is not a sprint—it is a lifelong journey. Hold firmly to it, and let every step you take toward Allah be a step you never regret taking. For the One who called you to His path is the Most Merciful, and He never abandons those who sincerely turn to Him.

📜 Verse 31-35 — An-Najm

And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -
Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.
Have you seen the one who turned away
And gave a little and [then] refrained?
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?
