Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Dhikr (ذِكْرٌ): Reminder, admonition, or a means of remembrance—something that awakens the heart and mind to the truth.
- Al-‘Ālamīn (لِلْعَالَمِينَ): All of creation, specifically referring to both humankind (ins) and jinn (jinn)—every being endowed with intellect and responsibility.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse serves as a decisive and comforting conclusion to the preceding discourse, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was falsely accused of being mad or possessed. Allah, the Most High, refutes these baseless claims by affirming the true nature of what was revealed to him: the Qur’an. It is not the speech of a madman, nor the ramblings of a poet, nor the whispers of a demon. Rather, it is a reminder—a profound and universal admonition—sent for all of creation, encompassing both human beings and jinn, across every era and place until the end of time.
The word "dhikr" carries a dual significance: it is both a reminder of what humanity already knows in its innate nature (fitrah)—the oneness of Allah, moral accountability, and the Hereafter—and an admonition that awakens the heedless, guides the lost, and comforts the believers. It is not a book for one nation or one generation; it is a living message, eternally relevant, addressing the intellect and soul of every being who hears it.
This verse also carries a profound reassurance for the believers: the Qur’an is not a burden upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) but a mercy and a light for the worlds. It is a call to reflection, a source of healing, and a criterion of truth. For those who embrace it, it becomes a guide to success in this life and the next; for those who reject it, it stands as a witness against them.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: this Qur’an that you hold in your hands—or hear recited in the stillness of the night—is not an ordinary book. It is a direct address from your Creator to you, personally. It knows your struggles, your doubts, and your deepest aspirations. It calls you to a life of purpose, peace, and connection with Allah. Every verse is an invitation: to know your Lord, to purify your heart, and to attain a happiness that no material wealth can provide. The Qur’an is the ultimate gift—a reminder that never grows old, a light that never dims. Open its pages with sincerity, and you will find that it speaks to you, for it is indeed a reminder for all the worlds—and that includes you, right here, right now.
