Word Meanings:

  • لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ (layuzliqūnaka): Derived from *zalq*, meaning to cause someone to slip or fall. In this context, it refers to the intense, malicious gaze of envy that was believed to strike a person with harm—commonly known as the "evil eye." Some scholars also interpret it as "to make you slip" or "to overwhelm you" through the sheer force of their hostile stares.
  • بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ (bi-abṣārihim): With their eyes—i.e., through their piercing, hateful looks.
  • الذِّكْر (al-dhikr): The Reminder—meaning the Qur'an, which is a reminder and admonition for all of creation.
  • لَمَجْنُون (la-majnūn): Surely mad or insane—an accusation they leveled out of spite and denial.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O noble Messenger of Allah, the disbelievers, upon hearing the Qur'an, came so close to harming you with their intense, envious stares that they nearly caused you to stumble or fall—such was the venomous hatred and malice in their eyes. This was not merely a glance; it was a concentrated beam of hostility, born from their deep resentment of the truth you brought. Had it not been for Allah's divine protection and guardianship over you, their evil eye might have taken effect. Yet Allah shielded you, for His care for His Messenger is absolute and unyielding.

And alongside this malicious gazing, they uttered words of pure falsehood, following their whims and turning away from the clear truth: they said, "Indeed, he is surely mad." They called the one who brought the greatest guidance and the most luminous revelation a madman—an accusation that reflects their own blindness and arrogance. They could not find fault with the Qur'an itself, so they attacked the character of the one who delivered it, hoping to discredit the message by discrediting the messenger.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the enemies of truth will always resort to mockery, false accusations, and even supernatural means of harm out of envy and spite. But Allah's protection is the ultimate shield. Just as He protected His Prophet from their evil eyes and their slanderous tongues, He protects His sincere servants who cling to His Book and His way. So take comfort, O believer, in the certainty that no harm—whether from a jealous glance or a sharp tongue—can touch you except by Allah's leave. And when you face hostility for your faith, remember that the disbelievers' attacks are but a reflection of their own loss, while your reward with Allah is far greater and everlasting.

Let this verse also inspire you to seek refuge in Allah from the evil eye, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us, and to place your complete trust in Him alone. For He who guarded His Messenger from harm is fully capable of guarding you, guiding you, and granting you victory over every adversary—so long as you remain steadfast upon His path.

📜 Verse 49-52 — Al-Qalam

49لَّوْلَا أَن تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ
If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.
50فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."
52وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ
But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
