Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nataqna (نَتَقْنَا): We pulled out, plucked, or uprooted something from its place. Here, it means We lifted and raised the mountain from its base.
- Zullah (ظُلَّة): A canopy, shade, or covering — like a cloud that provides shade overhead.
- Zannū (ظَنُّوا): They were certain and convinced (in this context, it means they knew with certainty, not just assumed).
- Bi-quwwah (بِقُوَّةٍ): With strength, firmness, determination, and sincere resolve.
Tafsir (Explanation):
And remember, O Messenger, when Allah raised the mighty mountain above the Children of Israel after they had refused to accept the rulings of the Torah. The mountain was lifted from its very roots and suspended over their heads like a canopy of shade, casting its shadow upon them. They became absolutely certain that it would fall upon them and destroy them — and in that moment of overwhelming fear, they submitted and accepted the covenant.
At that critical moment, Allah said to them: "Take what We have given you with strength and determination — accept the Torah with firm resolve, even if it is difficult for you, and act upon its commandments with sincerity and diligence. And remember what is in it — the commands, prohibitions, and covenants — so that you may attain piety and protect yourselves from Allah's punishment."
This scene was a powerful demonstration of Allah's absolute power and His mercy. He did not destroy them despite their stubbornness; rather, He gave them a chance to reform themselves. The mountain suspended over their heads was both a warning and a call to return to the right path.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, contemplate this profound scene: Allah raised a mountain — a symbol of immense weight and stability — and held it over a people who had been disobedient. Yet even in this terrifying moment, His mercy was present. He did not let it fall; He gave them the opportunity to accept His guidance.
This teaches us that Allah's commands come with His mercy. When He asks us to follow His guidance, it is not to burden us, but to protect us and elevate us. The Torah itself contained light and guidance, and Allah wanted them to hold onto it firmly — not reluctantly, but with conviction.
Today, we have the Qur'an — the final and most complete revelation. Allah asks us to hold onto it with the same strength and determination. When you open the Qur'an, do so with a heart ready to receive its guidance. When you act upon its teachings, do so with sincerity and firmness. Remember what is in it — the promises of Paradise, the warnings of Hell, the stories of the righteous, and the wisdom of the Creator.
Let this verse inspire you to take your relationship with the Qur'an seriously. Do not be among those who neglect it or treat it lightly. Instead, be among those who hold onto it with strength, remember its teachings, and live by its principles — so that you may attain true piety and success in this life and the next.
The mountain was lifted over them as a warning — but for us, the Qur'an is a mercy. Embrace it, and let it transform your life.
