Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Min ẓuhūrihim – from their backs (i.e., their loins), meaning their descendants were extracted from the lineage of Adam's progeny.
- Ashhadahum ʿalā anfusihim – He made them witnesses against themselves, calling their own innate nature to testify.
- Alastu bi-Rabbikum – "Am I not your Lord?" – a rhetorical question of affirmation, not inquiry.
- Balā – "Yes indeed," an emphatic acknowledgment.
- An taqūlū – "Lest you say," meaning this covenant was taken so that no excuse remains.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, remind the people of the profound moment when your Lord brought forth from the loins of Adam's children all their descendants—generation after generation—and made them testify against their own souls. He asked them: "Am I not your Lord?" And with the innate disposition He placed within them, they answered: "Yes, indeed, You are our Lord. We bear witness to this truth."
This was not merely a historical event lost in time; it is the eternal covenant embedded in the very fabric of human nature. Every soul, before entering this world, acknowledged its Creator, its Sustainer, and its Sovereign. This is why when a person reflects deeply upon the heavens and the earth, upon the order of the universe and the design of their own being, they find an undeniable recognition of their Lord—a truth that resonates within their innermost self.
Why did Allah take this covenant? So that on the Day of Resurrection, no one could claim ignorance. So that no soul could say: "We were unaware of this; we had no knowledge that You were our Lord, and no proof was established against us." The covenant closes every door of excuse and opens every window of accountability, for the knowledge of God is not something foreign to the human soul—it is its very essence.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and consider: this verse is not a distant story but a living reality within you. The acknowledgment of your Lord is not something you must learn from outside; it is already written in the depths of your heart. When you witness the beauty of a sunrise, the vastness of the ocean, or the intricate design of your own body, something within you stirs—a quiet voice that says, "There is a Creator." That voice is the echo of the covenant you made with your Lord before you ever took your first breath.
So do not neglect this innate truth. Let it guide you back to your Creator, for He did not leave you without guidance. He sent messengers, revealed books, and placed signs in the universe and within yourselves—all to remind you of what you already know. The path to Him is not a journey into the unknown; it is a return to the most familiar truth of your own soul.
Embrace this covenant today. Let your heart affirm what your nature already knows: that there is no god but Allah, and that He alone deserves your worship, your love, and your obedience. For on that Day, when you stand before Him, you will not be able to claim ignorance—but you can, today, claim the truth and live by it, so that your witness on that Day will be one of honor, not of regret.
