Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ — guides to the right path, correctness in belief, speech, and action.
  • فَآمَنَّا بِهِ — so we believed in it (the Qur'an) and accepted it as truth.
  • وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ — and we will never associate partners (in worship).
  • بِرَبِّنَا أَحَدًا — with our Lord, anyone or anything whatsoever.

Explanation of the Verse:

This is part of the conversation of a group of jinn who had listened to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reciting the Qur'an. When they returned to their people, they said: "Indeed, we have heard a marvellous Qur'an. It guides to the right path, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord."

The verse highlights that the Qur'an is not merely eloquent speech or beautiful words — it is a divine guidance that leads to *rushd* (righteousness and correctness) in all matters: in creed, in worship, in dealings, and in moral conduct. The jinn recognised this truth immediately, and their faith was not just a verbal declaration but a firm commitment: they vowed never to commit shirk (associating partners with Allah) again.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the Qur'an is a living guidance that speaks to every soul — human or jinn — that approaches it with an open heart. The jinn, despite being unseen creatures, understood the essence of tawheed (monotheism) and submitted to it wholeheartedly. How much more should we, as human beings who have been given the Qur'an as a direct revelation, embrace its guidance and purify our worship for Allah alone?

The declaration "we will never associate anyone with our Lord" is a powerful oath of loyalty. It shows that true faith is not just belief in the heart but a determination to act upon that belief — to reject all forms of false worship, whether it be idolatry, blind following of desires, or reliance on created beings instead of the Creator.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, if the jinn — who are not bound by the same obligations as humans — recognised the truth of the Qur'an and submitted to it, what excuse do we have? The Qur'an is before us, its verses call us to success and salvation. Let us respond as the jinn did: with sincere belief, firm commitment, and a life dedicated to worshipping Allah alone. Let us make this verse our own declaration: "We believe in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord." This is the path to true peace, both in this world and the Hereafter.

Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an.

3وَأَنَّهُ تَعَالَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا اتَّخَذَ صَاحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
4وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى اللَّهِ شَطَطًا
