Word Meanings:

  • ثُمَّ (Thumma): Then, indicating a sequence of actions.
  • نَظَرَ (Nazara): He looked, meaning he reflected, pondered, and deliberated.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the narrative about al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, a prominent figure among the disbelievers of Quraysh. After he had already thought deeply and prepared his accusations against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Qur'an, the verse tells us that he then looked again — he cast another glance, reconsidered his words, and re-evaluated his position. This was not a casual glance, but a deliberate act of deep contemplation and careful thought, as he tried once more to find a flaw or a weakness in the Qur'an that he could exploit to discredit it before his people.

The sequence here is significant: he thought, then he looked, then he frowned, and then he turned away in arrogance. This shows that his rejection of the truth was not based on ignorance or lack of understanding — rather, he understood the message clearly, but his pride and stubbornness prevented him from accepting it. He kept searching for a way to undermine the Qur'an, but every time he reflected, the truth became more evident to him, and the harder it became for him to find a genuine fault.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse invites every sincere seeker of truth to pause and reflect deeply, just as this man did — but with an open heart. When you truly look at the Qur'an with fairness and honesty, you will find that it is impossible to dismiss it as mere human speech. Its eloquence, its depth, its wisdom, and its transformative power all testify that it is the word of Allah. The difference between al-Walid and the believers is not in the quality of reflection, but in the intention behind it. He looked to find faults; the believers look to find guidance. So, open your heart, reflect sincerely, and let the light of the Qur'an illuminate your path — for whoever seeks the truth sincerely, Allah will surely guide them to it.
