Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿAbasa (عَبَسَ): He frowned and knitted his brows, showing displeasure and anger.
  • Basar (بَسَرَ): He intensified that frown, making his face even more stern, harsh, and grim.

Explanation of the Verse:

After reflecting and planning in his mind how to attack the truth, this man—who had come to listen to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—found himself trapped. He had no valid argument, no sound criticism, and no way to refute the Qur’an’s message. So, in his frustration and arrogance, he frowned and scowled, his face turning dark and harsh. The verse describes how he "frowned and became stern" — a physical manifestation of his inner turmoil and defiance. His face betrayed what his heart could not conceal: he was defeated by the truth, yet too proud to accept it. Instead of submitting to the light of guidance, he hardened his expression and turned away in stubbornness.

This scene is a powerful reminder of how the human soul reacts when confronted with undeniable truth while clinging to pride and worldly status. The frown was not merely a facial expression—it was a symbol of his rejection of mercy, his refusal to soften his heart, and his choice to remain in darkness rather than embrace the light of revelation.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, look at your own face when you hear the Qur’an. Do you frown, or does your heart open with humility? The Qur’an is a mercy from your Lord, a guide to every good, and a source of peace for those who seek it. Do not be like those who turned away with scowls and hard hearts. Instead, let your face brighten with the joy of faith, and let your soul soften with the remembrance of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) brought nothing but goodness, and the Qur’an is the ultimate truth—so embrace it with an open heart, and you will find success in this life and the next. Allah’s door of repentance is always open, and His mercy encompasses all who turn to Him sincerely.
