📖 English Meaning
Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate - for you there is no guardianship of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.

Meanings of Key Words:

  • Āwaw (آوَوا): Gave shelter and provided a home.
  • Naṣarū (نَصَرُوا): Aided and supported them against their enemies.
  • Walāyah (وَلَايَة): Mutual alliance, protection, and guardianship.
  • Mīthāq (مِيثَاق): A binding treaty or covenant.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse establishes the beautiful bond of brotherhood and mutual responsibility among the believers, painting a vivid picture of the early Muslim community's unity and sacrifice.

Allah begins by describing two groups of believers who earned His special favor. The first group are those who truly believed in Allah and His Messenger, then migrated from the land of disbelief to a place where they could freely practice their faith, and struggled with their wealth and their very lives in the cause of Allah — spending their money, enduring hardship, and risking everything to uphold the word of truth. The second group are those who gave them shelter and support — the Ansār of Madinah, who opened their homes, shared their wealth, and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the migrants in defending the religion of Allah.

For these two groups, Allah declares that they are allies and protectors of one another. Their bond is not merely social or tribal, but a profound spiritual brotherhood rooted in faith, mutual love, and shared sacrifice. This alliance supersedes even blood ties when those ties conflict with faith.

Then Allah addresses the third category: those who believed but did not migrate. He tells the believers: "You have no obligation of protection or inheritance towards them until they migrate." This was not a punishment, but a wise measure to preserve the strength and unity of the Muslim community. Migration was essential at that time to build a strong base for Islam and to protect the believers from persecution. However, Allah immediately adds a compassionate and just exception: if these believers who remained behind are oppressed in their religion and seek your help, then it is your duty to aid them — unless the oppressors are a people with whom you have a binding treaty, in which case you must honor that treaty and not break it.

The verse concludes with a profound reminder: "And Allah is All-Seeing of what you do." Nothing escapes His sight — every act of sacrifice, every moment of hesitation, every intention behind your deeds. He sees the migrant who left everything behind, the host who shared his home, the one who sought help, and the one who honored his covenant. And He will reward each soul according to its sincere intention and action.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

How beautiful is this divine system that Allah laid down for His servants! It teaches us that faith is not merely words on the tongue, but a living reality that demands sacrifice, solidarity, and mutual care. The believers are one body — when one part suffers, the whole body feels the pain. This verse calls us to look at our own communities: Are we supporting our brothers and sisters in faith who are oppressed? Are we opening our homes and hearts to those in need? Are we honoring our promises and treaties?

The early Muslims set an example that shames us today — they gave everything for their faith and for each other. The Muhājirūn left their homes and wealth, and the Ansār shared everything they had, even preferring their brothers over themselves. This is the spirit of Islam — a spirit of love, generosity, and unwavering support. Let us revive this spirit in our hearts and communities, for Allah sees all that we do and will reward us accordingly. And know that the greatest honor is to be counted among those whom Allah describes as "allies of one another" — a bond that will continue into eternity in the gardens of Paradise.

📜 Verse 70-74 — Al-Anfal

O Prophet, say to whoever is in your hands of the captives, "If Allah knows [any] good in your hearts, He will give you [something] better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."
But if they intend to betray you - then they have already betrayed Allah before, and He empowered [you] over them. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption.
But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.
