📖 English Meaning
And [there are] those [hypocrites] who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, "We intended only the best." And Allah testifies that indeed they are liars.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Diraran (ضِرَارًا): Harm and injury — meaning they built it to cause harm to the believers.
  • Kufran (وَكُفْرًا): An act of disbelief, reinforcing their hypocrisy and rejection of Allah and His Messenger.
  • Tafriqan (وَتَفْرِيقًا): To cause division and split among the believers.
  • Irsadan (وَإِرْصَادًا): To prepare and lie in wait — making it a base for plotting.
  • Al-Husna (الْحُسْنَى): The good and righteous intention — which they falsely claimed.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse exposes one of the most treacherous plots of the hypocrites against the early Muslim community in Madinah. A group of hypocrites built a mosque not for the worship of Allah, but with four wicked objectives: to cause harm to the believers, to strengthen disbelief, to split the Muslim community by diverting some worshippers away from the Mosque of Quba', and to prepare a hideout and meeting point for a man named Abu 'Amir al-Rahib — a corrupt monk who had previously fought against Allah and His Messenger and had gone to the Byzantine Empire to gather forces to attack the Muslims.

When their scheme was exposed, these hypocrites swore solemn oaths, claiming: "We only intended good — we wanted to help the weak, the poor, and those who found it difficult to travel to the distant mosque." They tried to disguise their malice as mercy and their treachery as kindness.

But Allah — who knows what is in the hearts and sees through every pretence — bears witness that they are absolute liars. Their oaths were false, their intentions were evil, and their project was built upon hypocrisy and deceit. Consequently, the Prophet ﷺ ordered this mosque to be demolished and burned, purifying the earth from a structure that was raised not upon piety, but upon treachery.

A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim: Allah judges deeds by the intentions behind them. A place of worship built upon hypocrisy brings no reward — only ruin. How many actions today are dressed in the garments of goodness while concealing malice, division, or personal gain? Allah sees all. He knows the sincerity of the pious and the deceit of the schemers.

Let this be a reminder to purify our hearts, to build our deeds upon *taqwa* (God-consciousness) and love for the believers, not upon envy, hatred, or worldly interests. For the mosque that is truly beloved to Allah is the one whose foundation is laid upon piety and the pleasure of Allah — and that is the mosque that will stand firm in this world and bear witness for its builders in the Hereafter.

And let us thank Allah for His protection of this Ummah, for He exposed the plots of the hypocrites then, just as He continues to protect His religion from every scheme until the Day of Judgment. Indeed, Allah's promise is true, and His witness is sufficient.

📜 Verse 105-109 — At-Tawbah

And say, "Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so, will] His Messenger and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."
And [there are] others deferred until the command of Allah - whether He will punish them or whether He will forgive them. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And [there are] those [hypocrites] who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, "We intended only the best." And Allah testifies that indeed they are liars.
Do not stand [for prayer] within it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.
Then is one who laid the foundation of his building on righteousness [with fear] from Allah and [seeking] His approval better or one who laid the foundation of his building on the edge of a bank about to collapse, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hell? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
