Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- مُرْجَوْنَ (Murjawna): Deferred, delayed, or held in suspense.
- لِأَمْرِ اللَّهِ (Li-amrillah): For Allah's command or decree.
- يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْ (Yatoobu 'alayhim): He turns to them in mercy and accepts their repentance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse addresses a group of believers who had lagged behind in the Battle of Tabuk—not out of hypocrisy or rejection of faith, but due to weakness, hesitation, or negligence. These sincere yet faltering souls were neither fully condemned nor fully exonerated. Instead, their matter was left entirely in the hands of Allah, the Most Wise, to decide as He wills.
These were three honorable companions: Murarah ibn ar-Rabi', Ka'b ibn Malik, and Hilal ibn Umayyah. They had not made excuses like the hypocrites, nor did they deny their fault. When the Prophet ﷺ returned from Tabuk, they honestly confessed their failure to join the expedition. Their case was therefore deferred—neither accepted nor rejected—until Allah's decree would come.
The verse presents two possibilities for them:
- Allah's punishment — if they remained upon their negligence without true repentance.
- Allah's mercy and acceptance of their repentance — if they turned back to Him sincerely.
And Allah's knowledge encompasses all things; He knows who is deserving of His justice and who is deserving of His grace. His wisdom governs every decree, and His actions are never without profound purpose.
This verse carries a beautiful and hopeful message for every believer who has stumbled: your matter is never hopeless. Even when you fall short, even when your case is uncertain, the door of divine mercy remains open. The very fact that Allah deferred their matter—rather than immediately condemning them—shows His gentleness with His servants. He gives time, He waits, and He watches for the heart that turns back to Him.
Indeed, the story of these three companions is among the most moving in Islamic history. For fifty long nights, they waited in anxiety and remorse. The entire community distanced itself from them, and even the Prophet ﷺ instructed the believers not to speak to them. Yet they did not give up. They held onto hope in Allah's mercy. And when their repentance was finally accepted, the joy that filled their hearts was beyond description—so much so that Ka'b ibn Malik prostrated in gratitude, and the earth itself seemed to expand with the relief of divine forgiveness.
A Call to the Reader:
O soul that has stumbled and fallen short! Look at the mercy of your Lord. These companions were not perfect—they made mistakes, they lagged behind, they disappointed their Prophet and their community. But their story did not end in despair. It ended in divine acceptance and eternal honor in the Qur'an.
Your sins, however great, are not greater than Allah's mercy. Your failures, however repeated, do not close the door of repentance. The same Allah who accepted the repentance of these three companions is alive and present today, waiting for you to turn to Him with a sincere heart.
Do not let Shaytan convince you that your case is hopeless. Do not let your own guilt push you away from the One who created you and loves you. Return to Allah, and you will find Him more eager to accept you than you are to return. For He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, and His wisdom is perfect in all that He decrees.
*"And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."* — He knows your struggles, your sincerity, and your efforts. And His wisdom will never let a sincere heart go unanswered.
