Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ahbar (الأحبار): The scholars and learned men of the Jews.
  • Ar-Ruhban (الرهبان): The monks and ascetics of the Christians who devoted themselves to worship.
  • Ya'kuluna amwal an-nas bil-batil (يأكلون أموال الناس بالباطل): They consume people's wealth unjustly, through bribery, corruption, and deception.
  • Yasudduna 'an sabil Allah (ويصدون عن سبيل الله): They turn people away from the path of Allah, i.e., from Islam and its teachings.
  • Yaknizuna (يكنزون): They hoard and accumulate wealth, storing it up without fulfilling the rights due upon it.
  • 'Adhabun alim (عذاب أليم): A painful, severe torment.

Explanation of the Verse:

O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His guidance! Allah is warning you, His faithful servants, about two grave dangers that corrupt societies and destroy souls.

First: He alerts you to the corruption of many among the scholars of the People of the Book and their monks. Despite their outward appearance of knowledge and piety, many of them devour people's wealth unjustly — taking bribes, exploiting their religious positions, and manipulating the law for personal gain. And worse than that, they actively block people from the path of Allah. They use their influence to discourage others from embracing the truth of Islam, hiding the light of guidance that was revealed in their own scriptures. Their greed and arrogance made them enemies of the very truth they were supposed to uphold.

Second: Allah then turns to address a broader and more universal issue that touches every believer: the hoarding of wealth. Those who accumulate gold and silver — amassing fortunes and treasures — and do not spend them in the way of Allah, who do not pay the obligatory Zakat and fail to fulfill the rights of the poor and needy upon their wealth, to them Allah says: "Give them glad tidings of a painful torment!"

This is a striking use of irony — the word "glad tidings" (bushra) is normally used for joyful news, but here it is used to announce the most severe punishment. It is as if to say: if they take pleasure in hoarding their treasures, then let them await the news that will bring them nothing but agony. Their wealth, which they cherished and withheld, will become a source of their punishment in the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse carries a profound lesson for your life. It teaches you that wealth is not an evil in itself — rather, it is a trust from Allah. The true owner of all riches is Allah, and He has placed wealth in your hands as a test: will you use it for His cause, or will you cling to it selfishly?

The scholars and monks mentioned in this verse were not condemned for their knowledge or their worship, but for their corruption and their misuse of influence. This is a timeless warning for every person of knowledge and religion: never let your position become a tool for personal gain, and never let your actions turn people away from the path of Allah.

And for every believer who has been blessed with wealth, remember that Zakat is not merely a tax — it is a purification. It purifies your wealth, your heart, and your soul. When you spend in the way of Allah, you are not losing; you are investing in your eternal future. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The wealth of a servant will not decrease by charity" — and indeed, Allah multiplies what you give in His path.

So let this verse be a wake-up call. Examine your heart: are you attached to your wealth, or are you attached to your Lord? Do you use your resources to support the truth, or do you withhold them out of fear of poverty? Allah has promised provision to those who spend, and He has promised a painful torment to those who hoard. Choose wisely, for the choice you make today will determine your tomorrow — both in this world and in the Hereafter.

May Allah guide us all to be among those who spend generously in His cause, who purify their wealth through Zakat, and who use every blessing they have to draw closer to Him. Ameen.

📜 Verse 32-36 — At-Tawbah

They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah refuses except to perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.
It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allah dislike it.
O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and the monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and avert [them] from the way of Allah. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah - give them tidings of a painful punishment.
The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."
Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].
