Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse poses a rhetorical question that carries a tone of denial and astonishment: How could there ever be a valid and lasting covenant for the polytheists with Allah and His Messenger, when their history is filled with treachery and breaking of pledges? Their hearts were not sincere, and their words were not trustworthy. Yet, Allah, in His perfect justice and mercy, makes an exception for those with whom the believers had made a treaty near the Sacred Mosque — referring to the peace agreement of al-Ḥudaybiyyah. Certain tribes, such as Banu Ḍamrah, had honored their commitments and did not betray the Muslims.
So the command comes: As long as these people remain upright and faithful to their treaty with you, then you too must remain upright and faithful to them. Do not be the first to break a promise, and do not let suspicion or fear lead you to injustice. Fulfill your side of the agreement completely, for a true believer is one who honors his word, even with those who differ in faith.
The verse concludes with a profound and beautiful statement: "Indeed, Allah loves the muttaqīn" — those who are conscious of Him, who keep their promises, who act with integrity, and who fear Allah in all their dealings. This is a call to every believer to embody the highest moral character, because righteousness is not merely in ritual worship but in honesty, loyalty, and the fulfillment of covenants. Allah’s love is the greatest reward, and it is attained through taqwā — a life lived in awareness of His presence and in obedience to His commands.
This verse teaches us a timeless principle: Islam is a religion of justice and trust. Even in times of conflict, a Muslim does not cheat, deceive, or betray. We honor our agreements as long as the other party honors theirs, and we leave the ultimate judgment to Allah, who loves those who are mindful of Him. Let this be a reminder for us in our daily lives — in our families, our businesses, and our communities — to be people of our word, for that is the path to Allah’s love and to true success in this world and the Hereafter.
