📖 English Meaning
How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Illa (إِلًّا): Kinship, blood ties, or a bond of relationship.
  • Dhimma (ذِمَّةً): A covenant, treaty, or pledge of protection and security.
  • Yarqubu (يَرْقُبُوا): They observe, respect, or honor.
  • Fasiqun (فَاسِقُونَ): Those who defiantly disobey Allah’s commands, break their pledges, and deviate from the path of righteousness.

Explanation of the Verse:

How can there be any treaty or covenant with such people, when their true nature is exposed? If they were to gain the upper hand over you, they would show no mercy and would not honor any bond of kinship, nor any pledge of protection or agreement. Their enmity would drive them to treat you with the utmost cruelty, disregarding every moral and contractual obligation.

They try to deceive you with their tongues, uttering sweet and pleasing words to win your approval and make you feel secure. But their hearts are filled with hatred, malice, and rejection of the truth. Their outward speech contradicts what they inwardly conceal. The majority of them are truly rebellious and corrupt, for they break their promises and violate the terms of their treaties whenever it suits their interests.

This verse serves as a powerful warning to the believers: do not be fooled by the pleasant words of hypocrites and treaty-breakers. Judge people by their actions and their proven loyalty, not by their flattering speech. Trust must be built on sincerity and faithfulness, not on empty words that hide ill intentions.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This noble verse teaches us a timeless principle in dealing with those who are hostile to Islam and the Muslims. It urges us to be wise and vigilant, to recognize that some people may use soft language as a cover for their true enmity. At the same time, it reminds us of the importance of upholding our own commitments and being people of integrity and honesty. Islam calls us to be truthful in our words and sincere in our hearts, and to place our trust in Allah alone, who knows the secrets of all hearts. Let this be a lesson for us to strengthen our faith, purify our intentions, and remain steadfast in our dealings, knowing that Allah is always with those who are patient and righteous.

📜 Verse 6-10 — At-Tawbah

And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.
How can there be for the polytheists a treaty in the sight of Allah and with His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at al-Masjid al-Haram? So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].
How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.
They have exchanged the signs of Allah for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.
They do not observe toward a believer any pact of kinship or covenant of protection. And it is they who are the transgressors.
