Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Ish'taraw" (اشْتَرَوْا): They bought or exchanged; here it means they traded away something of immense value for something worthless.
- "Thamanan qaleelan" (ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا): A small price; referring to the fleeting, insignificant gains of worldly life.
- "Saddu" (فَصَدُّوا): They blocked or turned away; both themselves and others from the path of truth.
- "Sabilihi" (سَبِيلِهِ): His path; the way of Allah, which is Islam and the guidance of the Quran.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the tragic state of those who, despite being addressed by the signs of Allah—His verses, His commands, and His covenant—chose to sell them off for a paltry price. That price was nothing but the cheap, transient pleasures of this world: status, wealth, or the satisfaction of their desires. They did not merely neglect the truth; they actively exchanged it, as if they were making a transaction, giving away the eternal for the ephemeral.
What did they receive in return? A "small price" indeed—because everything in this world, no matter how much it amounts to, is ultimately insignificant when weighed against the guidance of Allah. They thought they were gaining something, but in reality, they were losing everything.
Then, their crime deepened: they did not just keep the truth from themselves; they blocked others from the path of Allah. They became obstacles, preventing those who sought the truth from entering into Islam and following the straight path. They distorted the message, discouraged the seekers, and used their influence to turn people away from the light.
The verse concludes with a powerful condemnation: "Indeed, evil was what they used to do." Their actions were not merely mistakes or lapses in judgment—they were corrupt at their core. The exchange of divine guidance for worldly trifles, and the active effort to mislead others, is a deed so ugly that it earns the severest rebuke.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. It is a warning that resonates across time. How often do we, in our own lives, trade the truth for a small gain? A moment of dishonesty for a worldly benefit, a compromise of our principles for social acceptance, or a neglect of our duties to Allah for the sake of convenience? Every time we choose the fleeting over the eternal, we are repeating the same transaction described here.
But the door of repentance is always open. Allah, in His infinite mercy, calls us back to Him. He reminds us that no price in this world can ever match the value of His guidance. The Quran is a treasure beyond measure, and the path of Islam is the road to everlasting success. Do not let the glitter of this world deceive you, for it is but a shadow that will fade, while the Hereafter is the true and everlasting life.
Let this verse be a wake-up call to cherish the signs of Allah, to honor His covenant, and to be among those who not only follow the truth but also invite others to it. Be a guide, not a barrier. Be a light, not an obstacle. For the best of deeds are those that bring you closer to Allah and help others find their way to Him. May Allah protect us from the evil of our own souls and grant us the wisdom to value what truly matters.
