Translation — Tafsir

Meanings of Key Words:

  • الضُّعَفَاء (al-du'afā'): The weak and vulnerable—such as the elderly, the chronically ill, and those with physical disabilities that prevent them from fighting.
  • الْمَرْضَى (al-marḍā): The sick—those suffering from illness or disease that hinders their ability to participate in battle.
  • لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ (lā yajidūna mā yunfiqūn): Those who cannot find the means to spend—i.e., the poor who lack the financial resources to equip themselves for military expedition.
  • حَرَجٌ (ḥaraj): Sin, blame, or restriction—a burden of guilt.
  • نَصَحُوا (naṣaḥū): They were sincere and faithful—devoting their hearts and actions to Allah and His Messenger.
  • سَبِيلٍ (sabīl): A path or way—here meaning any grounds for blame, punishment, or accountability.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse is a profound demonstration of Allah’s mercy and justice, removing any burden of guilt from those who have legitimate excuses for not joining the battle. Allah, the Most Merciful, addresses three categories of people: the weak—such as the elderly, the disabled, and those with chronic conditions; the sick—those whose health prevents them from fighting; and the poor—those who lack the financial means to prepare for the journey of jihad. For all of these, there is no sin in staying behind, provided their hearts are sincere.

The condition for this exemption is sincerity: "if they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger." This means they must hold firm faith in their hearts, obey Allah’s commands to the best of their ability, and harbor no ill will or hypocrisy toward the Prophet (peace be upon him) or the Muslim community. Their inability to fight is not a choice but a circumstance, and Allah judges by what is within their hearts and what they are capable of doing.

Then Allah declares: "There is no way (of blame) against the doers of good." This is a beautiful reassurance—those who strive to do good, even within their limitations, are protected from any criticism or punishment. They are not to be reproached for what they cannot do, for their intentions and their sincere efforts are known to Allah.

The verse concludes with the comforting words: "And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." This is a reminder that Allah’s mercy encompasses His righteous servants. He forgives their shortcomings and overlooks their weaknesses, rewarding them for their sincerity and good intentions. This is a source of great hope and comfort for every believer who fears falling short—Allah’s mercy is vast, and He never burdens a soul beyond what it can bear.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is this verse in its compassion and understanding of human limitations! Islam is not a religion of harshness or impossible demands—it is a religion of mercy, balance, and justice. Allah knows that His servants are not all equal in strength, health, or wealth, and He has built His law upon this reality. This verse teaches us that Allah judges us by our hearts and our sincere efforts, not by our circumstances. So, dear reader, never despair if you cannot do everything—do what you can, with sincerity, and trust that Allah’s mercy will cover your shortcomings. The door of goodness is always open, and the Most Merciful never turns away those who strive with pure intentions.

📜 Verse 89-93 — At-Tawbah

Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. That is the great attainment.
And those with excuses among the bedouins came to be permitted [to remain], and they who had lied to Allah and His Messenger sat [at home]. There will strike those who disbelieved among them a painful punishment.
There is not upon the weak or upon the ill or upon those who do not find anything to spend any discomfort when they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There is not upon the doers of good any cause [for blame]. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Nor [is there blame] upon those who, when they came to you that you might give them mounts, you said, "I can find nothing for you to ride upon." They turned back while their eyes overflowed with tears out of grief that they could not find something to spend [for the cause of Allah].
The cause [for blame] is only upon those who ask permission of you while they are rich. They are satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and Allah has sealed over their hearts, so they do not know.
