Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals a critical moment during the preparation for the expedition of Tabuk, a time that tested the true faith of every Muslim. Two distinct groups of people are described here, and their contrasting behavior serves as a powerful lesson for all of us.
The first group mentioned are the Bedouin Arabs from the surrounding desert tribes. They came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) not with genuine, honest excuses, but with fabricated and flimsy pretexts. They asked for permission to stay behind, claiming hardship, poverty, or family obligations. However, their excuses were hollow and insincere. They were not truly unable to fight; rather, they lacked the conviction and willingness to sacrifice for the cause of Allah. Their coming forward with these false justifications was an attempt to appear compliant while avoiding their duty.
The second group, described as those who "sat back" and "lied against Allah and His Messenger," were the hypocrites. They did not even bother to come and offer an excuse. They simply stayed behind, openly defying the call to jihad, because their hearts were devoid of true faith. They had claimed to believe, but their actions betrayed their lies. They had no intention of supporting the Prophet or the Muslim community in their time of need.
The verse concludes with a stern and sobering warning: a painful punishment will befall those among them who persisted in disbelief. This punishment is twofold—in this world, they would face humiliation, defeat, and the consequences of their betrayal; and in the Hereafter, they would face the eternal torment of the Fire.
This verse is a profound reminder for us today. It teaches us that Allah (SWT) sees through all pretenses. We cannot hide our true intentions behind hollow words or manufactured excuses. Our faith is not a matter of lip service; it is proven through sincere action, sacrifice, and standing by our brothers and sisters in times of need. When the call to truth and justice comes, we must not be among those who find excuses to sit back. Instead, let us be among the sincere believers who rush to support the cause of Allah, knowing that true success lies not in comfort and convenience, but in obedience and sacrifice for His sake. Let this verse inspire us to examine our own hearts and ensure that our actions always align with our words, for Allah is All-Aware of what is in our breasts.
