Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَطَّلِعُ (Tattali'u): To ascend, overlook, or penetrate deeply into something.
- الأَفْئِدَةِ (Al-Af'idah): The hearts (plural of *fu'ad*), referring to the innermost core of a person—the seat of intellect, intention, and belief.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of the blazing Fire of Allah, which was mentioned in the previous verse. Here, Allah tells us that this Fire "ascends and penetrates to the hearts"—meaning it does not merely scorch the outer skin or bodies of the sinners, but it pierces through their very flesh and reaches their innermost hearts, burning them from within.
The *fu'ad* (heart) is the center of a person's faith, intentions, and convictions. By burning the hearts, the punishment becomes even more intense and agonizing, because the very core of their being—where their disbelief, mockery, and arrogance once resided—is now consumed by the very Fire they used to deny and joke about. This is a profound act of divine justice: the heart that harbored contempt for the truth and mocked the believers is now the target of Allah's wrath.
This imagery serves as a powerful reminder that Allah's punishment is not superficial—it reaches the deepest recesses of a person's soul. No sin, no matter how hidden in the heart, escapes His knowledge, and no wrongdoer can shield themselves from His justice.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The Fire of Allah is not like any fire you have seen in this world—it is a creation of His power, designed to penetrate where no earthly flame can reach. Yet, the same Allah who created this Fire also opened the doors of His mercy and forgiveness. He sent His final revelation, the Qur'an, to guide you away from that Fire and toward His eternal Paradise.
Do not let your heart become hardened by arrogance or mockery, as the people described in this surah did. Instead, let your heart be soft, humble, and filled with love for your Creator. Turn to Him in repentance today, for He accepts those who return to Him sincerely. The choice is yours: a heart that burns in regret in this life, or a heart that burns with the Fire of punishment in the next. Choose wisely, for your heart is the key to your eternal destiny.
