Word Meanings:

  • Sabaru (صبروا): They remained patient and steadfast in the face of hardship, adversity, and trials, holding firmly to their faith.
  • Al-Salihat (الصالحات): Righteous deeds — actions that are pleasing to Allah, performed sincerely for His sake and in accordance with His guidance.
  • Maghfirah (مغفرة): Forgiveness — the covering of sins and the erasure of their consequences by Allah’s mercy.
  • Ajrun Kabeer (أجر كبير): A great and immense reward — referring to Paradise and the eternal bliss that Allah has prepared for His righteous servants.

Explanation of the Verse:

After describing how human beings tend to fall into despair and ingratitude when touched by hardship, and how they become boastful and arrogant when blessed with ease, Allah makes a clear exception. He says: *"Except those who are patient and do righteous deeds."* These are the believers who, when afflicted with difficulty, do not lose hope or turn away from Allah. Instead, they endure with patience — trusting in Allah’s wisdom, submitting to His decree, and seeking His reward. They also restrain themselves from sin and remain steadfast in obedience, even when circumstances are tough. And when they are blessed with ease and prosperity, they do not become arrogant or ungrateful; rather, they use those blessings to perform good works and show gratitude to their Lord.

For such people — and only for them — there is a different outcome. They are promised forgiveness for their sins, which cleanses them of all shortcomings, and a great reward that is beyond measure. This reward is none other than Paradise, the eternal abode of bliss, where no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine the joys that await them.

This verse carries a profound and beautiful message: patience is not merely passive endurance — it is an active, faith-filled response to life’s trials. When combined with righteous deeds, it transforms a believer’s character and elevates their rank. The one who truly understands this is never shaken by hardship, because they know that every difficulty is an opportunity for reward, and every blessing is a test of gratitude.

A Da’wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine promise. Allah does not ask us to be perfect or free from trials — He asks us to be patient and to keep doing good. No matter how heavy your burdens are, no matter how many times you stumble, the door of forgiveness is wide open, and the reward is immense. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *“Amazing is the affair of the believer. Verily, all of his affairs are good for him. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If something harmful happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him.”* (Muslim)

So, hold on to patience and fill your days with righteous deeds — prayer, charity, kindness, honesty, and remembrance of Allah. These are the keys to a life of peace in this world and an eternal reward in the Hereafter. Allah’s promise is true, and His mercy encompasses all who turn to Him with sincere hearts. Let this verse be a source of hope and strength for you, and know that your Lord sees every effort you make and will never let it go to waste.

📜 Verse 9-13 — Hud

And if We give man a taste of mercy from Us and then We withdraw it from him, indeed, he is despairing and ungrateful.
But if We give him a taste of favor after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, "Bad times have left me." Indeed, he is exultant and boastful -
Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds; those will have forgiveness and great reward.
Then would you possibly leave [out] some of what is revealed to you, or is your breast constrained by it because they say, "Why has there not been sent down to him a treasure or come with him an angel?" But you are only a warner. And Allah is Disposer of all things.
Or do they say, "He invented it"? Say, "Then bring ten surahs like it that have been invented and call upon [for assistance] whomever you can besides Allah, if you should be truthful."
