Word Meanings:

  • Azaqna (أذقنا): We caused him to taste — meaning We granted him and let him experience.
  • Rahmah (رحمة): Mercy, blessing, or favor — such as health, wealth, security, and well-being.
  • Naza'nahā (نزعناها): We snatched it away, removed it, or took it back.
  • Ya'ūs (يَئُوس): Extremely despairing — one who loses all hope, intensely pessimistic.
  • Kafūr (كَفُور): Extremely ungrateful — one who denies and rejects the blessings of Allah, greatly lacking in gratitude.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah — the Most Merciful — describes a common human weakness that we must all recognize and strive to overcome. Allah says: "And if We give man a taste of mercy from Us, and then We withdraw it from him, indeed, he is utterly despairing and deeply ungrateful."

The meaning is that when Allah bestows upon a person a blessing — whether it be good health, financial ease, safety, or any other comfort — and then, for a wisdom known to Allah alone, He takes that blessing away, the person often falls into two grave faults:

First, extreme despair: He loses all hope in Allah's mercy. He thinks that the blessing will never return, and that his situation is hopeless. He forgets that the One who took it away is the same One who can restore it in an instant — or grant something even better. This despair reflects a weak trust in Allah's power and mercy.

Second, utter ingratitude: He forgets all the other countless blessings he still possesses. He becomes blind to the favors that remain, and instead of turning to Allah with patience, supplication, and hope, he turns away with resentment and denial. He acts as though Allah has never been good to him at all.

This verse serves as a gentle yet powerful reminder for every believer: trials and losses are part of this worldly life, but they are not the end. The believer's heart should remain anchored in hope in Allah's mercy, even when the clouds of hardship gather. Gratitude should not be conditional upon receiving what we desire — rather, it should be a constant state of the heart, recognizing that every breath, every moment of life, and every hidden blessing is a gift from the Most Gracious.

So, dear reader, when hardship strikes and a blessing is withdrawn, let your heart not sink into despair, and let your tongue not utter ingratitude. Instead, say: "To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return," and know that after every difficulty comes ease, and that your Lord's mercy is far vaster than any trial you face. Turn to Him in supplication, for He loves the one who calls upon Him with hope, and He is capable of returning what was taken and granting what is far greater.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Hud

And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days - and His Throne had been upon water - that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed. But if you say, "Indeed, you are resurrected after death," those who disbelieve will surely say, "This is not but obvious magic."
And if We hold back from them the punishment for a limited time, they will surely say, "What detains it?" Unquestionably, on the Day it comes to them, it will not be averted from them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
And if We give man a taste of mercy from Us and then We withdraw it from him, indeed, he is despairing and ungrateful.
But if We give him a taste of favor after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, "Bad times have left me." Indeed, he is exultant and boastful -
Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds; those will have forgiveness and great reward.
