Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Jinnah (الْجِنَّةِ): The jinn — unseen beings created by Allah from smokeless fire, among whom are devils (shayateen) who whisper evil suggestions.
  • An-Naas (النَّاسِ): Mankind — human beings, among whom there are also devils who whisper evil into the hearts of people.

Explanation of the Verse:

This final verse of Surah An-Nas completes the picture of the source of the whispering evil that seeks to corrupt the human heart. After the previous verses described the one who whispers evil suggestions into the breasts of mankind, this verse clarifies that this whisperer is not limited to one category of creation. Rather, the devilish whisperers come from two sources: the jinn and mankind.

From the jinn, there is Iblis and his progeny — the shayateen who continuously strive to mislead humanity. From mankind, there are also devilish individuals — humans who spread corruption, doubt, and evil suggestions among their fellow human beings. Both types of whisperers work to turn people away from the remembrance of Allah and from righteousness.

Some scholars have also noted that this verse can be understood to indicate that the whispering reaches both jinn and humans — meaning that the devil whispers into the hearts of the jinn as well as into the hearts of humans, for both are accountable beings who face the same test of obedience to Allah.

This verse teaches us a profound truth: evil is not confined to one realm or one type of being. The believer must be vigilant against the whispers that come from within the human community — from those who spread doubt, falsehood, and immorality — just as much as against the whispers of the jinn devils. Both are real, and both are dangerous.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse invites you to recognize the full scope of the spiritual battle you are engaged in. The enemy is not invisible alone — he also walks among us in human form. But take heart! For the One who revealed this protection is the Lord of both mankind and the jinn. He is the King who has power over all His creation, and He is the God who hears and answers the one who seeks His refuge.

When you recite Surah An-Nas, you are not merely uttering words — you are arming yourself with a divine shield. You are declaring your dependence on Allah alone, the Master of all worlds, the One who can protect you from every whisperer, whether seen or unseen. Make this surah your daily companion, especially in times of anxiety, doubt, or spiritual weakness. Let it be a fortress for your heart, a light for your soul, and a means of drawing closer to the Most Merciful, who never abandons those who turn to Him.

And know that the ultimate victory belongs to those who place their trust in Allah and remain steadfast upon His path. The whisperers may try, but they can never overcome the one who is protected by the Lord of the heavens and the earth. So hold firm, seek refuge, and let your heart find peace in the remembrance of Allah — for truly, in His remembrance do hearts find rest.
