Surah Ar-Ra'd — Verse 1

• Alif-Lam-Mim-Ra (المر): These are among the disjointed letters (huruf muqatta'ah) that appear at the beginning of some Quranic chapters. Their precise meaning is known only to Allah, yet they serve as a miraculous challenge, demonstrating that the Quran is composed of the very letters the Arabs spoke, and still they could not produce its like.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse opens with the disjointed letters "Alif-Lam-Mim-Ra," which, as with similar letters at the start of other chapters, point to the miraculous nature of the Quran. These letters are a challenge to mankind: this Book that you hear is composed of the same letters you speak and write with, yet you are utterly incapable of producing anything like it — for it is the speech of the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

Then Allah declares: "These are the verses of the Book" — meaning these verses, with their profound meanings and eloquent wording, are the signs of the divine scripture. They are clear proofs of Allah's truth, guiding humanity out of darkness into light. The verse also alludes to the stories of past nations and the scriptures revealed to earlier prophets, all of which confirm the message brought by Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Allah then affirms: "And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth." This is a direct address to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), reassuring him and his followers that the Quran is the pure, unadulterated truth from Allah — free from any falsehood, distortion, or error. It is the final and most complete revelation, confirming what came before it and superseding all previous scriptures. There is no doubt in it, and no one can bring any valid objection against it.

Yet, despite this undeniable truth, Allah says: "But most of the people do not believe." This is not because the truth is unclear or hidden, but because of arrogance, stubbornness, and blind following of ancestors. Most people turn away from the truth not due to lack of evidence, but due to their refusal to submit their pride and desires to their Lord. They do not reflect upon the Quran's verses, nor do they ponder its meanings — otherwise, they would surely recognize it as the word of Allah.

For the one who truly believes in this Book finds peace in this world and salvation in the Hereafter. The door of guidance is open, and your Lord is calling you — will you answer?
