Word Meanings:

  • "بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍ" — Without pillars or supports.
  • "اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ" — Rose above the Throne in a manner befitting His majesty, without any resemblance to creation.
  • "وَسَخَّرَ" — Subjugated and made subservient for the benefit of creation.
  • "لِأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى" — For an appointed term, a fixed period known only to Allah.
  • "يُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ" — Explains and makes clear the signs and proofs.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah — the One and Only, the Creator of all that exists — is the One who raised the heavens high above you without any visible pillars or supports that you can see. Look up at the sky: it stands firm, vast, and unbroken, held by His infinite power alone, not by any material structure. This is a direct invitation to reflect on the greatness of the Creator, for no human hand could raise such a majestic canopy, and no physical pillar could hold it in place.

Then, after creating the heavens and the earth, He rose above the Throne — a rising that befits His divine majesty, far beyond human comprehension, without any resemblance to His creation. We affirm it as He described it, without asking "how" and without distorting its meaning.

He then subjected the sun and the moon to His command, making them serve the needs of His creatures. Each one travels in its precise orbit, never colliding, never delaying, never hastening — all moving toward an appointed term that only Allah knows: the end of this worldly life. This perfect, unerring system is a living proof of His wisdom and absolute control.

He manages all affairs — from the tiniest atom to the greatest galaxies — with perfect order and justice. He explains His signs and proofs clearly, one after another, so that your hearts may be filled with certainty of meeting your Lord on the Day of Judgment. This certainty should move you to prepare for that meeting with sincere repentance, righteous deeds, and devotion to Him alone.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and contemplate this magnificent universe. The heavens above you, the sun that gives you light and warmth, the moon that marks your months and seasons — all of them are servants to you by Allah's command, yet they never disobey His will. If this entire universe is so perfectly organized, can you doubt that its Creator has a plan for you? Can you live your life as if you will never stand before Him?

The One who raised the heavens without pillars is the same One who knows your every breath, your every thought, your every secret. He did not create you in vain, nor will He leave you without purpose. The certainty of meeting Him should fill your heart with hope and awe — hope in His boundless mercy, and awe of His perfect justice.

So turn to Him now, before that appointed term arrives. Let the heavens above you remind you of His greatness, and let the sun and moon remind you of His mercy. Submit to the One who manages all affairs, and you will find peace that this world can never give. Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason.
